Local bands play tribute (John Peel Tribute Gig
After the melodic and infectious pop of Blackflower, came the hardcore stoner-rock of Duma. The contrast could not have been more different, nor indeed, more misplaced.

The other bands on the bill were uplifting, but Duma put a downer on the evening with their doom-laden metal. The menacing screams of Eddie Carter would have had weaker mortals running for cover, and father’s locking up their daughters right across Tyneside.

With his face hidden by masses of straggly black hair, he growled his way through the set. Teenage Kicks was not so much a youth anthem, but more a wall of sound in a nightmare vision.

While the guitar riffs and pounding bass were well-executed, and the energy of the band could not be faulted, especially on set highlight Wesley Said, their inclusion on the bill did strike me as odd. They managed to completely clear the table of students behind me.
