Why this name?
It was a long time nickname so it just seemed natural to use it.
Do you play live?
Yes, occasionally, but not nearly like I used to. I like to play at certain writers nights around Nashville. I think my favorite place to play live is always down on Second Avenue on hot summer nights for the tourists here. They just seem to appreciate a new song the most of anyone that I've ever played for.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I disagree strongly with the RIAA and their recent strong arm policy of suing MP3 downloaders to "supposedly protect" songwriters incomes. I think they would do better by us songwriters to start addressing better royalty percentages, and more aggressive new artist development within the industry. I think that 1. they were too slow to get on the net, and 2. yes MP3s are here to stay. Going out and sueing 12 year olds and grandmas aint gonna put the cork back in that bottle for sure!
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
No, I believe as a business model the major labels have got the foodchain totaly backwards. The writer creates the song, but the writer ultimately ends up literally at the bottem of that food chain earning roughly 3 to 6 cents of each dollar his song makes(and thats if he doesn't co-write). That is why I started my own label. I write them, record them, market and sell them directly to the people who want my music. This is the only way writers will ever completly keep control over their own income short of unionizing. I guess I just felt like breaking their damn chains and not being their damn slave.
Band History:
I have been in Nashville since 1994. I've been writing songs since 1977. I've written around 437 songs and self-recorded 11 CDs to date.
Your influences?
I was raised listening to Johnny Cash, Eddie Arnold, Ray Price,Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn. Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and on and on... They influenced my writng along with Kris Kristofferson, Carole King, James Taylor, The Eagles,Charlie Daniels,Eddie Rabbit, Keith Whitley
Favorite spot?
I love Nashville for its constantly varying music enviroment. My favorite spot on this earth is to be in my babys arms of course! That is where I find all my inspiration. Second favorite spot is in my project studio.
Equipment used:
I write all my songs with my old Giannini Classical accoustic 6 string guitar. I do all my recording in my home studio "Dusty Rose" these days.
Anything else...?
I've completed and released my latest CD "All My Dreams Come True"! I hope you'll buy and enjoy it, and if you do I hope you'll spread the word. I think if the listening public starts to realize how little the writers are getting compensated for their work by the industry and the writers bring quality music directly to the public, they will buy their music. If you agree and like my music, please buy my CDs. Thanks Jake
