Modern urban Folk Rock
Born and raised in Nyack, New York, Liz Graham quickly fell into the musical direction of her family. With a love of music handed down from her father, and a love of poetry handed down from her mother, Graham started playing music and writing poetry by the age of eight. Poetry at that young age was inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's 'A Child's Garden of Verses.' Her first choice of instrument was the drums. Graduating to the guitar at age thirteen, Graham started to learn and play the music of Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, and Jackson Browne. She also began to write her own songs. These folk influences coupled with her rock influences (The Rolling Stones, Costello, Genesis, Clapton) from playing drums in her all-girl high school band, led Graham and her music in a folk/rock direction that she has stuck with throughout her young adult life. Active in ASCAP, the performing rights organization, Graham won the ASCAP Special Award in 1995, 1996, and 1997 in recognition of her appearances in clubs and on radio. The band she fronted in 1996 was chosen from over 10,000 entrants to participate in the 1996 Ticketmaster Music Showcase. Acceptance into the (by invitation only) ASCAP Advanced Songwriter's Workshop would further enhance Graham's visibility. Impressed by her songwriting prowess, a workshop classmate, Ed Pettersen, presented her to Tangible Music, the record label that had recently signed him to a deal. The label quickly signed Graham, with Pettersen tapped to produce the record. Graham's self-titled debut features an acoustic/electric sound ranging from folk-rock balladry to guitar-driven pop. The songs are tough, tight and infectious. With her evocative, detail-filled lyrics, Graham writes about relationships, dreams, and Sundays. Only when you get over the power of her voice do you begin to appreciate the sheer talent of Liz Graham. When not performing, writing, and otherwise engaging in music, Graham returns to nature via the rusticity of her home in the scenic Hudson Valley region of New York. She enjoys growing flowers and vegetables, meditating, hiking and yoga. Graham also notes "I have always loved oil painting and studied it for a time. I still paint for relaxation, only now I create crazy abstracts paintings for my own pleasure. They fill my home" Look for Liz Graham to join to the ranks of premier female singer-songwriters who have dominated the music scene of late.
