I'm Dave Anthony-from Long Island, NY. I am a guitarist and singer and I play mostly solo gigs in the NYC and Long Island area. The gigs I play range from wedding ceremonies, where I play classical guitar, to special event parties at restaurants, catering halls, or private homes, where I sing and accompany myself on acoustic guitar. I have an extensive repertoire of my own compositions, and I have three CDs of guitar music available. NEWSDAY reviewed my 2nd album (Solitaire for Guitar) and said, "quite the guitar player." One of my pieces, "Agincourt," is featured in the independent SAG film production, "Van Vorst Park," and it also won Fourth Place in the Guitar Player magazine Winter 09 International Competition!!
Band/artist history
The first band I was in was led by my friend Jim Kapey- "The Techniques". We played against Billy Joel and The Hassles in local battles of the bands way back when. "Exit West", led by Al Verunac, was my next band, and we had a recording contract with BT Puppy records in the early 70's. I've played with the "Joe Butler Blues Band", "The Rhythym Dukes" (guitar oriented rock), "The Bob Dehne Jazz Quintet", (I played bass for Bob, a fantastic vibist), "Guys and Dolls" (2 guys and 2 girls, playing for weddings), "A Touch of Brass" (a wedding band with a horn section), and "The Dave Anthony Band" (a four piece wedding band.)In addition, I've played gigs with Jim Chapin, legendary jazz drummer and father of Harry, and also with "The Chaperones" and "The Cavaliers" bands that had hits in the 50's and 60's. Now I focus on solo gigs, either playing classical guitar or singing with acoustic guitar accompaniment. I'm also writing songs with my old friend Al Verunac and a fabulous female singer, Shannon Rae.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I've done many different kinds of gigs, including clubs, hundreds of weddings, parties, TV shows, restaurants, local productions of Broadway shows, etc. My best gig was for a wealthy man who flew me and three other musicians down to Virgin Gorda, BVI to play on Necker Island for his birthday party! I've also performed at luncheons hosted by Luisa Potenza, host of WALK-AM's "Italia Mia" radio program, featuring songs sung in Italian. My most recent thrill was having my piece "Agincourt" added to the soundtrack of the new movie, "Van Vorst Park," starring Paul Dunleavy and Frank Vincent.
Your musical influences
-anyone who has written a great song or has highly developed guitar or vocal skills
What equipment do you use?
I just got a Bose L1 Model II and it's so great! Easy to carry and sounds terrific. It is a little on the trebly side, and I've alwasys notuiced about Bose PAs, but with the right EQ you can warm up the sound.
Anything else?
I love classic style guitar- that is, finger style nylon string guitar. My favorite composers are Sor and Carcassi. I also love singing, and I've had the privilege of studying voice with Carmen Baron and Carl Olsen. My third love is composing for guitar and songwriting.
