Hi. I'm Justin. My main musical instrument is the guitar (though I also play various others -- clarinet, tin whistle, mandolin...) and my main outlet is as one half of folk-comedy duo Ticklish Brother . However, I also enjoy playing traditional music, so I thought I would share a little of that here. I hope you enjoy what you hear.
Why this name?
It was chosen for me.
Do you play live?
I do enjoy playing live, mostly as part of Ticklish Brother , but as I've been living in a new area lately it's been all solo gigs.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Well, I think that it presents a real dilemma for the record companies -- one which they're finally trying to address in a semi-reasonable way. The draconian measures they initially took only turned the public against them, and helped foster the dangerous idea that all music should be free. I personally believe that artists have the right to be financially compensated for their efforts, and while I think that filesharing software has lots of legitimate uses, I also think that many people simply use it to avoid paying the money that artists need to survive. However, all the legislation and technological crippling (DMCA and copy-protected CDs, for example) in the world isn't going to sway people -- the good will needs to be there.

On a lighter note, the internet allows for the release of a lot more music than before, as well as levels of international collaboration and exposure that were previously far out of reach of low-profile artists.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I doubt it, since I'm kind of a control freak, but since it's not ever likely to happen it's not a question I lose a lot of sleep over :-)
Your influences?
I grew up listening to a lot of British folk music from the 60s (Bert Jansch, Pentangle, John Renbourn...), classical (Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi), a little jazz (Modern Jazz Quartet), and other bits and pieces. Later on, I discovered Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Portishead, Richard Thompson, Silly Sisters, Pearl Jam, They Might Be Giants, Amelia Curran... Recently I've been investigating Balkan brass bands, tibetan singing bowls, and electronica, so you might say that my musical interests and influences are somewhat varied.
Favorite spot?
I have lots of favourite places: Downtown St. John's Newfoundland, the Halifax waterfront, a particular hillside in Seoul, South Korea...
Equipment used:
I play a Simon & Patrick S&P6 acoustic guitar, a Yamaha clarinet, a Burnett voice...
Anything else...?
Anything!
