First, many thanks to Jessie Sevigny for generously donating to the City Of Refuge International on behalf of this project. Please take a look at this worthy cause: Here's the story on the first six songs (He's The Rock, Heart On Fire, Praise The Lord Of Glory, Bilbo Baggins, I Found Jesus, and The Underwear Song). Bill's wife Jessie talked to me (Gary Reed) after church on Sunday, April, 8, 2012 and told me that Bill's health is failing and he really wants to get recordings of some of the songs he's written. She was given my name since I have a home recording studio. It turns out, I had talked to Bill about a year earlier about recording his songs when I was in the process of renovating my studio. So, we decided to talk in a couple of months which never happened. I asked my buddies Kevin Sundholm, Dave Parker, and Garrett Johnson to help with the project and they agreed. It turns out that both Garrett Johnson and Dave Parker had also been in contact with Bill about a year earlier and for various reasons nothing materialized from those conversations. Well, it turns out the Lord had plans to bring this project together at this time! The following Thursday evening, Gary, Kevin, and Dave showed up at Bill and Jessie's place to learn Bill's song. Gary brought a hand-held digital recorder and we had Bill sing through nine of his songs. He had the words typed up and most of the chords so the first order of business was to capture the melodies. We prayed for strength for Bill which the Lord provided (Bill had only recently been released from the hospital after struggling through a bout of pneumonia). After Bill sang his songs, Kevin grabbed an acoustic guitar and started working through the chords. Bill also grabbed his songs and even though his hands are very arthritic, he managed to give us the basic idea for some of his tunes. Dave's and my job was to listen and try to remember as much as we could. After a couple of hours, we called it a night. The next step was to start recording. Before I describe that process, here's a rundown on the musicians for this project: - lead and harmony vocals, bass guitar, rhythm acoustic guitar, crazy man yelling in the background Dave Parker - lead vocals Gary Reed - electric guitar and acoustic guitar Garrett Johnson - drums, percussion (djembe, shaker) Two days later, on Saturday, Kevin, Dave, & Garrett came over to my place and we had a four hour session where we learned and recorded drums and bass guitar for four songs: He's The Rock, I Found Jesus, Praise The Lord Of Glory, and The Underwear Song. At the same time, we recorded what I thought was a scratch vocal track for each song. Dave and I hung out in my shop while Garrett & Kevin were in the studio. I played a guide acoustic guitar part while Dave sang. Well, it turns out, Dave is such an excellent vocalist that we ended up using his scratch vocal track for 2 1/2 songs. We ended up later on redoing Dave's vocal for parts of He's The Rock and all of The Underwear Song. Not too shabby given Dave hadn't even heard the songs until two days prior. Over the next few days I recorded guitar tracks for He's The Rock, Praise The Lord Of Glory, and The Underwear Song. Dave and Kevin then came over to the studio the following Wednesday and Dave finished his lead vocal tracks. Kevin and I then laid down acoustic guitar tracks for I Found Jesus. Kevin then added harmony vocals for Praise The Lord Of Glory, I Found Jesus, and The Underwear Song. So, now we had four songs completely tracked and it was time to turn our attention to the remaining songs. Kevin came over to the studio Saturday and we figured out which of the remaining songs we wanted to do. We were hoping to perform another three songs but with time/energy constraints we settled on Heart On Fire and Bilbo Baggins. Kevin pretty much did all of the work that day. He laid down bass guitar, acoustic guitar, and vocals for Heart on Fire and bass and acoustic guitars for Bilbo Baggins. The next day I recorded a second/lead acoustic guitar part for Heart On Fire. The following Monday, 4/23, Garrett came over and we recorded a djembe part for Bilbo Baggins. Two days later, Kevin laid down vocals for Bilbo Baggins and I laid down an electric guitar part. That was the end of the tracking for this project. I brought a rough mix of the songs over to Bill the next day and over the next couple of weeks Gary and Garrett did the mixing and mastering for these tunes. So, that's how these songs got recorded. Thanks Bill for writing some quality, fun, and interesting songs and for trusting us to interpret and perform them. The other two songs, She and Without You were written by William A. Sevigny and performed by William and his son. His son recorded these songs.
