My first band was called "Attitude", when it began & consisted of Chuck & Shawn - two neighborhood kids who enjoyed making Weird Al Yankovic style parodies of popular songs. We followed in the footsteps of Beastie Boys & Run DMC, mixing rap & hip-hop elements with a sprinkling of rock music. Wowsers, starting back from that old moment in ancient history has got me all misty. Maybe i hafta cry now... i think i can't even write anymore. Or maybe it's... Because i am a slacker. Or not. After we branched out on Attitude [adding friends Larry, Jerry & Craig-amongst others who would come and go over time-to make it feasible to be a live band] we eventually morphed into the band that became "Youth @ Risk", the first heavy rock band that we thought was breaking new ground, & making an innovative fresh new concept by having my old buddy Shawn [hip-hop emcee extraordinaire], [aka DJ E.B.A.] working with us as DJ - to play popular songs during concert music breaks, not only with some rap, but also as adding the turntable as an instrument to songs with extra scratching over the beats, with samples to give the sonic bed of our material more power, texture & options. Eventually Shawn & i, we brought back the original Attitude formula, with revolving guest musicians doing whatever, in the form of our fantastic "side" project Apex Zero. Now youth @ risk has become Asterisk Madigan. The Sixth Hour is no more, and Allgood Asylum is making things happen! www.allgoodasylum.com - www.shpelessmass.com/media - www.facebook.com/youthatriskband
Why this name?
Attitude? i think we just took off the "NW" from "NWA". Youth @ Risk? i stole it from a fellow high-school friend, Win Wallace.
Do you play live?
Do we play live? Yes, because playing dead is really for the dogs.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The mp3 really changes the industry because, this is yet another added convenience to our consumer capitalist society where we can buy the songs we want to hear on an individual basis, and we can avoid the record label trap of purchasing a 10, 12, 14 or however long tracked album... for the one good song the label has on the recording. Now it's even more convenient - where you never have to leave the comfort of your own home to buy the newest album from your favorite artist or group. The internet and mp3's brought us just another form of the same formula, shop at home.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Never in a million years. We went to the labels first. They rejected us, and they had their chance. They just taught me that major labels aren't going to do anything to help us, so why should we sacrifice time and talent to help them? Hello Logan Derrick of Maverick Records website division! Hello Dreamworks records! NOW ALL OF YOU CAN KISS MY... ehh nevermind, i got my million sold. Why should i gloat now?
Band History:
We did that for a long while playing countless live concerts at the local and regional level, and we did what we could with what we had, and we had a lot of fun, but it became more battles for control over the musical direction than there should have been. So things came apart. Eventually Shawn & i, we brought back the original Attitude formula, with revolving guest musicians doing whatever, in the form of our fantastic "side" project Apex Zero. Now youth @ risk has become Asterisk Madigan.
