I've been a musician pretty much my whole life... Played flute in grade school, moved on to bass & guitar in High School. Been in bands the whole time, tho none you've ever heard of. These days I mostly play guitar and sing- like old rock, blues, whatever.
Why this name?
Given at birth...
Do you play live?
Mostly play at church every Sunday morning with the Gilroy United Methodist Praise Band, 'pick-up' gigs and the occasional 'Walk to Emmaus' weekend. Been playing Hawaiian gigs lately with a co-worker who did 3 years on a cruise ship.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If the money was right...
Your influences?
My main influences would include: Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Jimi Hendrix, Mike Bloomfield, Peter Green, Danny Gatton, Clapton, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Eric Johnson, Duane Allman, Otis Spann, Little Walter, Diana Krall, Beethoven, Flying Burrito Brothers, John Fahey, Lincoln Brewster, Larry Carlton, Los Lonely Boys, Moby Grape, Rolling Stones, SRV, Youngbloods, Traffic... I spent lots of my youth (the 60's) at the Fillmore, Winterland, the Avalon. Saw almost all of the best from those days: Hendrix twice, Cream second bill to Butterfield; Led Zeppelin supporting Country Joe; Stones before & at Altamont...
Favorite spot?
planet earth. Gilroy's nice, but if I had my druthers, I'd pick Lahaina, on Maui.
Equipment used:
Like most anyone who's been playing awhile, I've managed to collect a few guitars & amps:
1966 Gibson ES-330 Red, P-90s. A great guitar, super easy to play. Got it in '70 when a friend from High School decided to move to the mountains and wanted an acoustic instead. Traded him my Yamaha FG180, $10 and a lid.
1978 Fender Telecaster Blonde, Rosewood neck, Custom Shop 'Texas Specials' pickups. My first new-bought electric guitar...
1989 Fender Strat Eric Clapton model, "Blackie". Really nice axe.
2000 Taylor 814-CE Awesome acoustic! Traded a guy on craigslist my 314CE, a 76 Ricky 4001 bass, and a Mexican Strat.
2000 Brian Moore I-1 Sunburst quilt. Don't play this one much... make an offer?
2001 Korina body, Karosa Padauk neck, PRS humbuckers. Made from parts bought off eBay. Pretty sweet.
2001 Frankenstrat- surf green. Another eBay project.
2008 Frankenstrat- White w/ blue pickguard, SCN Pups. A tone monster!
2005 Line 6 Variax 500 Red. My main axe for gigging, with the Pod XTlive, it's just insanely versatile: I can go from sounding like a Tele in a Deluxe, to a Martin acoustic, to a Les Paul in a Marshall, in the SAME SONG, with the push of a button! I will sacrifice tube-tone purity for versatility.
2005 Variax 300 Red. My backup for the 500.
1969? Kingston Acoustic, set up for lap/slide, open G tuning.
2007 Rogue acoustic Stars & Stripes, ($25 at MusiciansFriend!) also for slide, open E tuning.
Amps
1963 Fender Deluxe. Bought for $375 in the early 80's. Someone had hot-rodded it, really messed it up. I spent a few hundred having it restored in '01. It really sings!
1964 Fender Champ. Got at a garage sale for $50 in early 80's. Also at that sale got a '66 Mustang for $50 that I sold in early 90's for $350... crappy little guitar that's probably worth a grand or more now. Who knew?
1960 Gibson GA-8T Discoverer. A great little amp- not loud enough to keep up with a drummer, but great natural distortion, super responsive.
Rogue 200W Bass amp (crap)
Carvin 4 x 10 speaker cab. Hooked into the Deluxe as extension speaker, it really moves some air! Serious db action.
2000 Hughs & Kettner Club Reverb 30W, nice clean channel, great with the Line 6 stuff.
2005 GenzBenz Shenandoah 60: Stereo 60 watt acoustic/ vocal amp, the Taylor sounds great thru this thing. Has nice built in Alesis fx, too.
