The Poor Nephews are an all original five piece rock band. Founding members Ed Case: Guitar, mandolin, Akis Yerocosta, Bass, Michael Toti: drums, percussion and harmonica, were joined by Scott Birrell: Guitar and Bob Oswald: keys. The music varies from style to style as all the members write songs for the band. It could be funky or gritty, or smooth and drifty.
Why this name?
We used to be called Uncle Carl until we found out through the internet that there was another established NYC band called the same name. We became the Poor Nephews as a name play on the previous name.
Do you play live?
We play live locally at a bar in Collinsville CT called the Fireplace and at a bar in Avon called Freskos. We haved played other places as well in Hartford and the surrounding area. We all love to play, its a real pleasure to be able to create original music. All the special moments are too many to list, but the best is seeing people singing along to your songs or getting up and dancing to your grooves.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I think it levels the playing field quite a bit. As a band we now have a way to get our music to other areas without having to jump in a van and travel, which we can't do as we all have jobs.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If someone makes us an offer I'm all ears.
Your influences?
We have a range of influences, blues, classic rock, funk, americana. We have a focus on the lyrics and tend to build the song around that.
Equipment used:
I use Gretch drums.
