Anything else?
Sincerely, WV Trail Ride Associates Plan to keep late artist?s work alive By Matthew Hill Register-Herald reporter September 03, 2006 09:12 pm ? OAK HILL ? Although its creator passed from this life last year, a Robson man hopes to keep the artistic talents of his late friend alive by acquiring his work and sharing it with the world. To that end, Benny Dunfee established Loup Creek Art in early 2005 ? a company that he hopes will one day lead to a museum of sorts for the plentiful artwork of Billy Foster. Dunfee also has dreams of writing a book on the subject. Foster, a little known artist from Johnson Branch, succumbed to cancer last September at the age of 64. Despite his incarceration in the Moundsville penitentiary when he was 18, Foster spent the next 28 years in prison creating thousands of pen and ink drawings, as well as oil paintings. His favorite themes included coal mining, wildlife and rural West Virginia. Dunfee said Foster was an avid admirer of Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell, both depicters of the American West and Civil War scenes. Dunfee began buying artwork from his friend upon Foster?s release from prison in 1989. ?I just liked Billy,? he said. ?He had a rough life, and buying that helped him. He didn?t trust anybody, but one day he came down and I traded him an antique bicycle for some art. Billy was rough, I?m telling you. The last couple of years he really opened up to me and had faith and trust in me. He saw that I wasn?t out to gouge him. That really made me feel good.? Foster may be best known for a 1988 calendar of his art work ? a different piece for each month ? that was given to then-Gov. Arch Moore while Foster was in prison. He also did a painting on pig skin of ?Old Sparky? ? Moundsville?s electric chair from the days when West Virginia still employed capital punishment. Dunfee added that the Moundsville prison ? now a museum ? has a wall known as Billy Foster?s wall. On it hang six pictures done by the former resident artist. Dunfee now has those on canvas in his collection. ?I would say that I have over 50 (pieces of Foster?s art) that I can work with. I don?t own the rights to all of those. I have photos and things that I?ve accumulated through researching. I eventually want to publish a book with 50 of his best paintings.? A former Moundsville prison guard and her husband are helping Dunfee collect information on Foster, and the research has already yielded some rather unexpected fruit. ?I had a woman call me recently and said that she was Foster?s daughter from Paden City, up around Moundsville. He never said anything about a daughter. I thought it was a lie, but I got to talking to people up there and he lived in Paden City for awhile. He may have gotten a lady pregnant. I would say she is his child.? Dunfee doesn?t give up. He is currently working on getting his business license to sell prints of Foster?s art, and he is seeking any information he can find on his friend. He has even shared brochures with Charleston?s Clay Center, though he has yet to hear a response. ?I?m not a quitter. If I can get a book together with this art, I think it will go well, and I plan to donate a percentage of the proceeds to cancer prevention. I?ve invested about $20,000 so far in this. I breathe it 24/7. It?s like a challenge for me.? Dunfee urges anyone with information on Foster or his artwork to call 779-9303 or to send him an e-mail at loupcreekart@yahoo.com. ? Please go to The Official Site For Billy Foster at www.loupcreekart.com to view this extremely talented artist's work, make purchases, and sign the guestbook. Tell them KIM KEHALA sent you! Thank you and you will not be sorry! Kisses, Kim
