Vocab, an artist hailing from New Rochelle, NY has been on the local hip-hop scene for a few years. Starting off as a rapper, he has expanded behind the scenes as a producer and engineer.
Why this name?
After people heard me in local freestyles and battles I'd always hear people say "That kid's got mad vocab!" After a while people started calling me that and the name stuck.
Do you play live?
I play locally for friends and hip hop fans. I'd say a noteworthy moment was walking into a house party where my CD was being played. Up until that point, I didn't know people actually listened to my music unless I forced them to.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Even though it's hurt record sales for major labels, the internet's been good for up-and-coming and underground artists looking to be heard.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If a major label had a good offer for me then I'd probably sign.
Your influences?
I grew up on old school soul, funk and jazz of all kinds. I listened to everything from Motown, Earth Wind & Fire and James Brown to Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk and Herbie Hancock. I also listen to hip-hop, from early artists like the Fugees and A Tribe Called Quest to newer ones like Jay-Z, OutKast, and Nas. Right now I'm heavy on underground hip-hop like Pete Rock, Little Brother and MF DOOM.
Favorite spot?
Right here in New Ro.
Equipment used:
I use an Akai MPC 2000XL, Korg Triton Module and a Yamaha Motif 8 to make my beats that I mix with Pro Tools. I'm supposedly starting to use Reason software, but we'll see how that goes.
