Hello, My name is Papa Carl. I was given that name over time by several different people, so it just sort of stuck. Five years ago I was the recipient of two organ transplants that saved my life. I promised that I would do whatever I could to "pay back" and to also get back to music. Now, I've formed a 501c3 that is dedicated to using music to serve the transplant community. Along the way I've been helped by some wonderful artists. Most notably in that group are Lisa Bouchelle, Joe Zook, and Ernie White. There are so many who have made this all work I simply can't name them all here. I've got some pretty cool guys in my band too. My good friend Ernie Smith is our drummer and Hans Schneider is our bass player. These guys found me, just because they wanted to be part of this cause. We are having a blast !
Why this name?
When my son played college football, some of the players he played with started to call me "Papa Carl." Then my granddaughter decided I was Papa. When I was sick, bed ridden and things were looking pretty grim, a buddy of mine got my a custom guitar strap with "Papa Carl" embroidered on it. That sort of sealed the deal. Most people know me as "Papa."
Do you play live?
Yes. Most of our live stuff is at Kat Man Du, in Trenton, NJ, or at similar venues in the area. We run a huge Jam for Life in September, at KMD. I really enjoy it when we get to sit in with Lisa Bouchelle at one of her gigs, or with Ernie White...that is always a blast.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I'm an OLD dude. I started out with Elvis, Fats Domino and Bill Haley on 78 rpm discs....this whole new thing is like Star Trek to me. I need to beam up some young guys to help me most of the time. :-)
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
NO....like I said, I'm old. The only thing that could make that happen would be if they would support organ and tissue donation...save some lives.

I'm still here. I've had enough stuff happen to make me history that just the fact I can still play makes some people want to listen :-) I've been given the Gift of Life----the Gift of Life is a Gift of Love, what better way is there to express LOVE than with Music?
