Well, first off my name is Pete Mars. I'm from Long Beach, CA. I have been in love with music for as long as I can remember. I used to listen to Jimi Hendrix when I was younger so I begged my mom for a guitar, which I finally got at age 12. I started rapping seriously at about 16. My whole mission i guess is just to make really good music, like if everyone else is making Ford's right now, I wanna be the Maybach of hip hop haha.
Why this name?
I actually got my name from two things, but there's substories behind each part of my name. The name Pete comes from a Common song called "Chapter 13: Rich Man vs. Poor Man" where com says "I be the one they call Petey" and to me Petey is like my boastful braggadocious side. The name Mars comes from the old Jordan ads with Spike Lee and that was Spike's character's name. That's the artsy, expressive side of me.
Do you play live?
I do perform live. And yes I love it whole heartedly. I get this feeling from the crowd that is, well, better than sex to me. No bull. I get up there and just zone. I'd have to say when i got to open up for Q-Tip that was pretty hype for me.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I think it just enables artists to get their music out cheaper and by themselves. its a good marketing tool.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Honestly, yeah I would. Preferrably a distribution deal because I do hae aspirations of starting my own label. But if a label like G.O.O.D. or Def Jam came through with a really good offer, yeah I'd take it.
Band History:
I've performed for Q-Tip, Common, Consequence and 88-Keys. I'm also a producer, I sing, and write songs for other artists. I'm currently prepping the release of my debut project The Astro Boy EP which is finished and going to be released on iTunes. I'm working on my mixtape My Name Is Pete, which includes tracks from P Villa and some stuff I did. And my album which I have yet to name is in the beginning stages of production.
Your influences?
Man, I'd have to say, Jay-Z, Nas, Common, Kanye West, Prince, Hendrix, Michael Jackson, A Tribe Called Quest, The Fugees, De La Soul, Biggie and Too $hort.
Favorite spot?
Definitely Berkeley, CA or Hollywood
