My name is Dominique Smith, also known as De'Vion! My first major interest in music began when i heard the beat to Jill Scott's Getting In The Way. As a young child i never listened to the typical music for my age group. I was always listening to Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest, Jill Scott, Blackalicious, The Roots, Lauryn Hill, Floetry, Mos Def and a rack of others. It was really calm and had this really smooth vibe that made u wanna bob your head. I look forward to bringing this sound to my age group. Most teens now days listen to the "Soulja Boy" and Stanky Leg type music. Im looking to change the whole game of what is normally listened to. Ever since then, I've experimented with different instruments, to come up with my own signature sound and make beats that people could feel. My major goal is for my music to be heard on a large scale, and to do it at a young age so that i can change what is listened to by the people in my age group. I feel that in "mainstream music" the only people that i can depend on to give me the same sounds that I grew up listening to is "first and foremost Kanye West, Lupe Fisco, Andre 3K/3000,Common, Pharrell, and a few others. What i am excited about is that there is a amazingly large group of artists that are growing and being heard by many that can also bring back the sound of real Hip-Hop like Kid Kudi, Drizzy Drake, Charles Hamilton, Wale, Kids In The Hall, The Cool Kids, B.O.B, Mickey Factz, and a few others. I feel that the title of Q-Tips Cd the renaissance was a good name for this time in Hip-Hop. Renaissance means death and rebirth, and i think that is exactly what is happening with Hip-Hop today especially with all these new artists!!!! As of now, Im workin my ass off to become known as one of the people who brought the sound of Hip-Hop back to the people. Hope yall enjoy the music. Much love and comment about what u guys think!!
Why this name?
I felt that a hip-hop stage name wans't needed. I feel that my name is unique enough to attract attention
Do you play live?
Soon to be live on stage with artists
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I feel that the internet helps talent be noticed. Many people may have never had a chance at sharing the great musical talent they had or have if it wasn't for the internet
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Depending on who the record label is. I feel that mainstream music is not moving in the exact direction that i am. So i would be very cautious.
Favorite spot?
