D-809 is a new breed of Dominican Hip-Hop. Formed in early 2009 in Toronto, Canada the three friends came together to show their city how to do real Dominican rap. There's very few Dominican rappers out in Toronto, and there is very few doing what is being done in their native Dominican Republic. They've just come to prove something, literally startin from nothing. There hopes is to start a new movement in Toronto of not only Dominican Hip-Hop, but also Latino/Spanish Hip-Hop.
Why this name?
The first day we got together to record. We threw a couple ideas out. Kento was the one the brought the idea of D-809. 809 is the are code of Dominican Republic, and the D in spanish means De which in english means from. So it basically means From-809
Do you play live?
Rigjt now we're just in the grinding stages. Trying to get our music out there. We know what we're doing is very hard because its not a genre that is getting a lot of main stream play. Also we know we're mainly targeting one group of audience which is the Spanish speaking community, but we our doing our best efforts to get the English speaking audience into our material.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Mp3 changes the music industry because music is available to the listener at a click. Mp3 is only helpful for the up in coming artists who are just trying to get there music out there.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Honestly. I stay real to an un-writren rappers code. You just dont sign for anything. You gotta stay true to what youd do. Most major labels will want to take you and try to change your style. The genre we do requires us to be unique and original and we can't change that for a nice car or and iced out chain.
Your influences?
