Band History:
PLENTY TO BE THANKFUL FOR // Charitable act spreads spirit of Thanksgiving With great aromatic curls of smoke, the Thanksgiving spirit spread over downtown Port Richey on Wednesday. The scent was early but familiar and irresistible. One hundred turkeys were basking in a oversized smoker outside Alex's Place restaurant at Grand Boulevard and River Gulf Road. That evening, people who might otherwise go without a traditional meal lined up to take them away. "Our forefathers set the example to share," said Mark Abbott, president of the West Pasco Sertoma Club, which sponsored the giveaway along with restaurant owner Alex Babazadeh. "If you can help people when they're down and out, they rise up and know we're all in this world together and people do care." "It makes me feel good to give," Babazadeh added. "It makes somebody happy." Of the 100 turkeys, half were given away (mostly to homeless people in the area and to residents of an adjacent trailer park) and the other half sold for $20 apiece. The proceeds offset the cost of the operation, Abbott said. This is the fourth year the men have teamed up for charity. In 2001, Abbott asked Babazadeh to use his refrigerator to store turkeys and Babazadeh not only agreed but paid for an equal number of birds. Not every recipient had the means to prepare the turkeys, however. So this year it was decided they would be cooked in advance. Sertoma lent its smoker for the effort. The black beast came to life at 7 a.m. Wednesday. The 20- to 23- pound turkeys, bought at Wal-Mart, were rubbed with spices and laid on racks. Then the smoker lids were closed for an eight-hour cooking process. "It's about 175 now," head cook Jesse Green said, looking at a temperature gauge about 2 p.m. "We need to get to about 190 degrees." The deputy chef, 8-year-old Tanner Abbott, nodded in approval. "There's many ways to cook a turkey," Green said, "and this is one of the best." After voting at a City Council meeting in favor of the placement of a cooker for a charity turkey roast held outside Alex's Place restaurant by the West Pasco Sertoma Club, Abbott and owner Alex Babazadeh each received a $30 ticket at the pre-Thanksgiving event for "parking a vehicle, a wood-burning and cooker, on a public right-of-way" OH WELL, SOME PEOPLE JUST CANT STAND IT WHEN YOU GO OUT OF YOUR WAY TO HELP OTHERS.
