Eight Inch Tom Is a band located out of Jacksonville, Fl. Originally the band was made up of seven members. After several years together the band split up and was in a hiatis for several months. The drummer of the band, Panama Mike, decided to reform the band and started searching musicians ads for new band members. There he found John, A guitar player and Singer. Panama Mike and John got together to talk about each others goals and seemed to be on the same page with one another. John then placed several ads for another Guitarist , Bassist, & Singer/Frontman. Castro, A bass player of only a few years had played with a previous band writing original music. Castro has had alot of input in the bands writing. His talent will go along way. David - Guitar & Vocals has worked on original projects in the past before joining Eight Inch Tom. He is currently working on his music degree and also teaches guitar at a local studio in St. Augustine, Fl. Eight Inch Tom is currently in the studio working on their debut CD and are looking forward to playing some shows in the very near future. Why this name?
We get alot of questions about the band name. Here is the story. Enjoy.
During a recent interview with Falling Stone Magazine, the band was asked how we came up with our name.
FS: "So tell us John (rhythm guitar) how'd you guys come up with the name Eight Inch Tom?"
John: "Well, Panama Mike our drummer was directly involved with that. So, why don't I let him tell you about it?"
Panama Mike: "When the band first got together in 2002, we were trying to come up with a good name. At the same time, I just bought a new Mapex, Saturn Pro drum kit in gorgeous transparent amber. Originally, the kit was a six piece, and I wanted to add an 8-inch tom for higher, Santana type sounds.
My guy at the music store did a little checking and told me he didn't have one in stock, but he could order it. He said it would take about two weeks. I told him that was fine. Because it was a special order, I had to prepay for it and I owned it, there was no refund. After shelling out the additional bucks, I told him I'd give him a call in a couple of weeks. Two weeks later, I rang him up. He said he hadn't heard anything, but he'd check it out and get back to me. Three days later, I called him back. He told me he was still looking into it, and to give him a couple more weeks. Two more weeks pasted, and I called him back. He said the drum wasn't in stock in the warehouse, so the order was sent to Atlanta. They didn't have it there. The order was then sent to Texas, it wasn't in stock there either. Finally, the order wound up in California where they had the drum and it was being shipped the next day. Great, I said. He told me to give him a couple more weeks".
FS: "So it's been what six weeks since you've been waiting on this drum?"
Panama Mike: "Yea and all the guys started ragging on me about it. It was all in fun. They even made me an eight-inch drum out of cardboard.
Two weeks later, I called him back. He told me he hadn't seen it yet, and to give him a call back in another two weeks. Now I was starting to get angry. I gave him a little verbal abuse and he said he'd look into it and for me to give him a call back that afternoon. When I called back he informed me it was back ordered and to give him a call back in another two weeks!
To make a long story short Mapex is manufactured in China. The factory had to custom build the drum there, then they shipped it via boat to California, then it was sent along the chain to Texas, Atlanta, and finally here to Jacksonville".
FS: "So it came on a slow boat from China?"
Panama Mike: "Exactly!"
John: "It took four months to get that drum".
Panama Mike: "Yea and during that time I took a lot of ribbing about it. Finally one day J.B. the original bass player said, Hey that's what we should call the band Eight Inch Tom! I liked it. We all liked it, not to mention the innuendo".
FS: "I'll bet a lot of the girls want to know who Tom is."
The entire band looked at each other with a smile.
John: "The rest is history".
