Simple and plain, I love hip-hop in almost all its forms. I came into hip-hop during the golden era of boom-bap - the mid-to-late'90s - and ever since Premier's beat on "Come Clean" got me interested in production, I've been collecting records and building beats. Wouldn't really say I have a 'signature' sound. When I sit down to make a beat, sometimes I start with the drums and work from there, and sometimes I just start with a sound and build on that.
Why this name?
Wanted something simple and to the point. I'm doin' musical surgery around here.
Do you play live?
With a 2,000-strong record collection, I'm working my way slowly into DJing. Used to make mixtapes (literally, TAPES) for friends, so I can appreciate the skill in crafting a bangin' mix, as well as how it can make a dance floor blow up.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It's really a double-edged sword. It allows me to bring beats to anyone who finds this site. Other side of that coin, though, is that if I were to get some attention and put out an actual release, the first digital copy someone gets their hands on is goin' out through every torrent-streamer and bootleg site in the world. It has made exposure easier, but also made overexposure (through digital bootlegging/downloading) a sad reality.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yup.
Your influences?
Madlib, DJ Premier, Prince Paul, Beatminerz, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Paul Simon, Grateful Dead, Lee 'Scratch' Perry... I can keep going...
Favorite spot?
Pittsburgh, PA... the hometown. GO STEELERS.
Equipment used:
The right kind.
