Robin "Whispering Butterfly" Clark Guthrie
Native American flutist
A little over five years ago, music was just a childhood dream. Becoming a musical artist, composer, and writer was not something I thought would ever happen as my life took a very different path from my dream as a child to one of servant, healer, and nurse. Since I began playing the flute, I have been led back to my Native American ancestry. It has ignited the flame burning in my heart since I was young and has completed a cultural circle that my family drifted away from years ago. I was not brought up in or exposed to my Native American culture. Born and still residing in Halifax County, Virginia, I have always known of my ancestry and heritage but I had no real knowledge of the language, traditions, or various styles of Native American music. Once the flute entered my life, it was as if it had been in my hands and heart all my life.
My journey with the Native American flute has brought me opportunities to perform and take part in Native American cultural events in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. During these past years my music has shared air time with other Native American artist from around the country on WRIR 97.3 with Katie Tall Feathers and the Inter Tribal Radio out of Richmond, Virginia. Native Radio.com Internet Radio out of Taos, NM as well as Gathering of Nations Internet Radio hosted by Beulah Sunrise and KANW Monday night show hosted by Beulah Sunrise out of Albuquerque, NM.
JOURNEY WITHIN, my first CD, was released in 2006. MOTHER EARTH CRIES a single was released in May of 2007. My third CD, VISIONS was released April 2008 and my leatest single, On Eagle's Wings was released in 2009. I have recorded with Native American flutist and artist Stuart Three Crows Cardwell, Karen Sargent, native heart percussionist, and Lyndall Sargent, contemporary Christian artist, composer and flutist. In January 2009, I recorded for composer and musician John Catney for his CD, THE RACER'S EDGE. I am also a member of the International Native American Flute Association (INAFA) and Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI).
I play and sing for my Creator before all others and I am thankful that I get to share this gift with you. Aho!

Why this name?
The name Whispering Butterfly is the name given to me by an elder and Stuart's name is Three Crows. For us as a group, at this time when it is just Stuart and myself, we have decided on "Crows & Butterfly". Stuart and I have been performing, recording and having jam sessions for just over five years now. We had toyed with Butterfly and Crow before, but Stuart's wife made a good point that since we are almost always performing together that Crow's & Butterfly just seem to fit. So that seems to work for us. The name; SPIRIT WINDS is our entire groups name when performing which includes at this time, Stuart Cardwell, Karen Sargent, Warren Perkinson and myself.
Do you play live?
I play live at cultural events, weddings, church when asked live on radio and for TV News promotionals about Cultural events coming up. I consider anytime I play a special moment, but the very first time I was asked to play in the PauWau circle was a very special honor.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I think it has made it easier for artist to be heard around the world as well as given the listeners the ability to hear music and contact artist around the world.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes, I think I would.
Band History:
Stuart and I have been performing, recording and having jam sessions for over five years now. We have made many friends and some are just like family to us and are also musicians that we have had join us at personal get togethers, jam sessions, recording studio's and cultural events. We consider Karen Sargent and Warren Perkinson a part of us even if they are not always able to join us as we perform or play for cultural events, but they are always with us in heart.

Whispering Butterfly and SPIRIT WINDS
Music
Mother Earth Cries, a song borne of a dream that I had repeatedly over several months. Haunted by my dream and the feeling that I needed to share it with the world, I naturally turned to my music. This effort became VISIONS.
Inspirational, healing song, On Eagles Wings, a combination of ocarina, cedar flute, vocal and guitar. The sounds of nature, wolf, and melody created with the ocarina as the vocal and high cedar flute carries the spirit of the song.
Native American style flute with the sounds of wind, ocean waves and birds. I added to the music and natural sounds the fog horns made using the flute.
Flute, birds, wind and morning sounds in spring time.
A nice transition between diatonic and pentatonic flutes in this piece.
Sacred Grounds is one track from my first CD JOURNEY WITHIN! Non traditional song created playing a Native American style flute and back track I created to play Sacred Grounds.
Native American Flute and Prayer.
Most picture the bear walking or standind along the banks of a river or eating berries. That image changes for anyone that has seen and heard a bear charging. Great respect should be given them.
Easy listening song created with the wind, birds, streams & wood. Adding the music of three different flutes, the sounds of wood and life's breath come together with Mother Earth and all of The Creator's gifts for a relaxing melody.
One of the joy's of playing the Native American flute is to be able to sit out and play along with the music of nature and to able to blend in with all around you. Evening Calls is just one of those songs that I was able to take the beauty of nature
This is a song from heart, prayer and life's difficult moments.
Stuart Three Crows Cardwell plays a porcelain replica of an Eagle Bone Flute for this song. It's a beautiful haunting melody that felt right for the opening and closing of VISIONS.
A Gift For Thunder Dove
MOTHER EARTH CRIES was broken up into four sections for the VISIONS CD. By letting the music before and after each section help tell the story and carry the message to the people.
I play one of Odell Borg's Eagle Bone Flute (porcelain replica) in this song. To help keep the spirit of the song going Stuart Cardwell joins me on his Taos Drum.

Playing a 4winds flute made by Brad Youngs, Stuart keeps the beat going on his Taos drum as I play and Karen adds a soft turtle rattle to the melody.

I really like Here I Stand with you speaking.
I must have played it a dozen times, trying to
catch all the words, I did get most of them.
I also really like Mother Earth Cries and I think your
personal story is awesome. I am not Native American
but I truly enjoy your music. You have brought a great
comfort to me with your flute playing.

Enjoyed the spoken word and message you are sharing. The heart beat of the medicine drum always grounds me powerfully, I think it's one of the most powerful instruments on the earth. The combination of vocals and flutes is rich and heart warming. Wonderful piece!
