We combine primitive sound making techniques with new technology to create an indeterminate listening space without forcing an interpretation on the listener. If you like artists in the experimental, ambient, psychadelic, free-folk, and drone genres, then you might like Gavagai as well.
Why this name?
Imagine that you are a linguist with a native speaker of an unknown language. Your job is to translate his language into English. A rabbit runs by you. The native points to the rabbit and says "gavagai." What does he mean? Could be rabbit, could be animal, could be hippity hop. Could be lunch, could be ancestor, could be undetached rabbit parts. The point is that you don't know what he means, and there really is no way for you to discover a determinate meaning for the term "gavagai." The philosopher Wilard Van Orman Quine used this example to illustrate that we are in fact always in this situation. We use this term to refer to the indeterminate character of the sounds we make.
Do you play live?
We play locally, but are working on branching out in areas near Oklahoma. Contact us for booking. We are playing an all acoustic set on Dec. 18 at The Opolis in Norman, OK along with an excellent band Gray Field Recordings.
Band History:
In the fall of 2001 we did our first recordings straight to tape in Jesse's adobe, economy apartment with various sound making devices around us. We later mastered that raw material to become 'Spare Rabbit Parts'. Since then we have played sparse live shows, and recorded two more albums with a new one in the works. We have tried to maintain the spontaneous character of those earliest recordings while continuing to expand our sound explorations into new domains.
Your influences?
Insects, trees, children, chimps, Tibetan Monks, urban hums, Aborigines, Shamans, Swamis, Appalachia, being underwater, etc.
Equipment used:

Anything else...?
Email us if you are interested in supporting us by buying any of our CD-R releases (tracks from each are on this site). All albums are available for $7.00 a piece except that 'Spare Rabbit Parts' will take longer (we have to get more covers printed, which we probably won't do unless someone wants one) and we just finished Guardian of The Cattle, so covers are still waiting on it, but not for long.
