Hi! I'm Cathy and I love creating since we were created in the image of the Creator. Music is my first love for creating in the various fine arts.
Why this name?
It is simply my initials and maiden name. I wanted to honor my birthfather's name.
Do you play live?
Not at the moment. I am only creating digital compositions currently.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It has definitely made it easier for previously unexposed artists like myself to get their work out there for the public to explore.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Not sure at the moment.
Band History:
I taught myself to play guitar when I was in the twelfth grade. I went through an entire guitar book in one night much to my family's dismay. Hah! LOL! : 0 Then I practiced what I learned and asked my brother or father for a little advice now and then. My father played a flat top in the little country church we were going to then. So when a lady who played in church beside him found out I was teaching myself, she suggested I get a guitar myself and play along beside her and my father in my church. "Just watch and play the same chords we play," she said. Then I went to Charlotte, NC (about five hours away from my hometown) for bible school. During my second summer there I took six piano lessons. My teacher found out I had learned notes and chords on the guitar, so she began to teach me out of the hymnal instead of the beginner piano book. She showed me how to play the chords on the piano with my left hand (by ear since she noticed I had an ear for music) and the melody from the hymnal with my right hand. I had to leave bible school within a short time of my arrival that year so I only had those six lessons. Later I purchased an old upright piano and practiced now and then. Later I sold it. Then once in a while over the years I would have the opportunity to practice a little on a piano here and there. Around the late nineties I bought a keyboard. I hooked it up to my computer (the first one I ever bought) and played around with it. Some time later I put my music on the back burner for a few years. Somewhere in the early 2000's I began to get more serious about the keyboard and decided to try and really learn more about it. Next, a pastor at a church I helped out in a lot of areas needed a piano or keyboard player. I offered even though I did not know a lot. I promised to practice what I knew and strive to learn more. Then he brought a $10,000 Clavinova keyboard into the church for me to play (one he and his wife had in their home)! Boy did I ever feel blessed! I was thanking my sweet Jesus, you can believe that. Then I was in that church almost everyday practicing. I really enjoyed the keyboard because I could be lazy with the melody part and take my time getting back to learning my notes over again. So I could just sort of bang out chords, adding different voices and rhythms on the keyboard...and sound like a pro, especially when I added the automatic "Intro" and "Ending." Actually, I figured I could gain ground a lot quicker if I put off brushing back up on my notes for a while. Anyhoo, within two weeks of being serious on the keyboard, I composed my first piece of music on it ( I had composed a couple of tunes on the guitar way back when). It was entitled, "Perfect Peace," based on a scripture from Isaiah in the Old Testament of the bible. It was an instrumental piece and sound fairly contemporary in style, which was what I wanted. I think I used a 16 beat rhythm, which was prerecorded on the Clavinova. I added some prerecorded strings, piano, and synthesizer mixes. It was in an easy style. I composed a couple of more songs on it and later a few more on my own keyboard. Still later, I ended up traveling in the ministry and later with my job and have not played in a long, long, time. More recently, I found "Jam Studio" online and composed my first piece of entirely digital music on the computer. I created several mixes with the same program, which I want to go back to and develop later. Then hubby bought me a Mac and I was wowed with Garage Band. It's really funny, because when I was a little girl I used to pick out melodies by ear to a tiny toy piano, like "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." I would tell people I could play the guitar and piano. I really thought I knew how because I could pick out those tunes on the piano. They were only one noters, if you know what i mean. : ) One of my neighbors noticed it though and said, "Well, if she can do that with a toy piano, imagine what she could do with the real thing." That really encouraged me. I wanted to take lessons so badly but we could not afford them at them at the time. Also, when I was growing up, I used to envy my girlfriend for having a piano and taking lessons. Now and then I would attempt to pick out tunes on her piano when I was allowed to. So, I am thankful for the gift God has given me with music. Just wish I had more time to devote to composing it and learning even more stuff.
Your influences?
For a while as a child I lived next to my maternal great grandmother. She would watch Lawrence Welk religiously -- her entire household -- my mother, sisters and myself would gather in front of her television to watch and listen. Also as a child my church had wonderful worship music. In addition to the traditional piano and organ they had some brass and an accordian. How I loved to hear the brass! My step-father played at church and encouraged me to do the same after I taught myself to play. My brother had a beach band for a long time. Then he got into hard rock. They would jam in our garage late at night and into the early hours of the morning. One of my sisters had a lot of oldie 45's and I used to play those a lot. We had a house full of kids and we all listened to top 40 pop too. As I began to purchase my own music I bought things like, "The Boston Pops Orchestra, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Boots Randolph, the soundtrack from Love Story, Charlie Rich, and John Denver to name a few, along with my top 40. I really liked easy listening. In fact I found I enjoyed almost every kind of music. However, I did not like much of the classic country and did not like acid rock at all.
Favorite spot?
I love New York City. That's where I met my hubby. : )
Equipment used:
Currently I am using my Mac and Keystation Pro 88 Keyboard Controller by M-Audio.
Anything else...?
Hey, I am working on a new mp3 album, entitled, "Glory Dance." Check out the first song by the same name on my music player! :)
