My name is Bukeka and my desire is to use the power of myvoice to motivate and inspire well being in the world. My musical performances include opening for entertainment industry icons Oleta Adams, Harry Belafonte and Della Reece. She has also opened for world renowned authors such as Dr. Maya Angelou, Mark Victor Hansen, Gary Zukav, Marianne Williamson and Arun Gandhi.
Why this name?
I love to tell the inspiring story behing my name At age 6, I was immersed in the Civil Rights movement with my parents. Inspired by this great movement of change I wanted a new name. I chose Bukeka (boo-kay-kah) which means adorned on or princess in Zulu; a language spoken in South Africa. With my parents blessing i changed my name from Gretchen Elizabeth Newby and entered first grade with the name I had chosen – Bukeka.
Do you play live?
I perform at various New Thought churches around the country and currently marketing my I AM WORTHY OF LOVE concert.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I love the effect the internet has had on the music industry. The entire world immediately becomes your audience.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I would sign with a major lable as long as i can still do what i do.
Your influences?
My influences are jazz, blues, and r&b like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaugh and Chaka Kahn.
