Music
My attempt at a country ballad. Nodding to both 'Tumbleweed Connection' and 'Madman Across The Water' - my 2 favorite Elton John albums. The bridge of this songs especially recalls that period of his writing.
A song about losing one's confidence and losing one's self, or perhaps its a song about losing someone you love. Whatever the case, it's about loss and lamenting loss.
A very Beatle-esque approach. Particularly mindful of the 'White Album' which has proved an enormous influence.
One of my few collaborations. In this case, I wrote the music after my esteemed friend, the writer Jim Windolf, sent me a set of lyrics which to this day seem pretty cryptic to me.
Probably my best piece of storytelling. About a man and a woman separated by years and continents. The song takes place in the hours and minutes before their imminent reunion.
Recorded on the KORG D1600. Very basic guitars keys bass and drums. With a pretty dry vocal. About a spy in retirement.
This is one of those songs that could have one in a number of different directions. Posted here is a 'fast' version recorded as a rough but charming demo.
I wanted to try slowing down the tempo of this song so I could emphasize the 'call and response' of the lyric. This wound up becoming the 'released' (online anyway), version.
A bizarre and eclectic song mixing various elements including urban R&B. A psychological purge of 9/11.
A bit of self-analysis, pop psychology, and introspection. Inspired equally in part by Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney and Burt Bachrach.
A second attempt at this song. A 'Burt Bachrach meets Damon Albarn' twist yields some interesting results.
This is one the greatest pop songs ever written. Composed by the great, great Ray Davies, it's the only cover song I've ever recorded.
An instrumental experimenting with drum loops and orchestral samples. The melody came to me in a dream while I was in Greece the summer before I recorded this.
Anger, frustration, resentment, disappointment. In the end an escape from a bad relationship. Culled from too many conversations I've heard and overheard over the years. Written in '03, demo recorded '04.
A song about deciding whether to leave the city or stay and stick it out....I left.
I recorded this song on my Korg D1600 digital deck (16 track). The drums are me playing live on an electronic kit. I was rediscovering some 'Tumbleweed Connection-era' Elton John at the time, and the stab at the orchestration certainly nods to that.
