Bryan O'Quinn was one of the few underground dance music artists to enjoy negligible mainstream exposure during the late 80s and early 90s heyday of hip-hop soul. O'Quinn's smooth seductive crooning style and exciting dance moves earned him a significant female following and made him a presence on the up and coming R&B, dance and underground house music scene.
Even after industry grimier brands of output eclipsed the ultramodern love stories OQuinn favored, he transitioned his music into the more retro-leaning neo-soul movement, as it was honest and inevitable.
Why this name?
Bryan O'Quinn is my real name. Bryan means strong and O'Quinn means wise.
Do you play live?
Yes, I love the live performance experience. When Im onstage the exchange with my audience is amazing! It really is like a giving relationship that loves you back. I will be promoting the new album, although we have no dates as of yet.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I have been making records since the late 80s. Although I was very young at the time, I actually remember having my music produced and distributed on vinyl. [Smiling] Some of the younger people I am with just think that is so funny. I recall going to record stores in New York and truth is it was really an amazing time for music. Im glad that I had that experience.
Today, the internet has opened up a world of possibility for people who appreciate music to experience things they never would have experienced,"
As an artist, the conversation you have with your fan base is about the most precious thing that you have. My fans have been able to find me
"For many artists the internet has truly leveled the playing field for independent musicians - I for one am greatful.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes, if the right opportunity presents itself .
