We play raw and rugged hip hop, not that commercialized junk you hear on the radio these days.

Music is a matter of passion, not a commodity to be bought or sold.

MCs have the power to entertain but the obligation to inspire and inquire for the sake of bettering their community. Music should have the power to make people think in addition to its' power to feel enjoyment.

Positivity's in demand and everyone should always be true to themselves (as cliche as that may be). Too many people have tried and failed to emulate something they simply are not. Hip Hop is about being who you are and not caring what others think, not creating an gangster image through violence, drugs, and misogyny. Hip hop has been stereotyped as those negative things but those musicians are reporting the reality of their upbringing and understanding, not glorifying it. Rap about what you know, listen to others for what you don't know.

Hip Hop does not belong any single group of people, it belongs to everyone.

Band History:
Speak Easy started as an improvisational acoustic jam band in the spring of 2007 under the name Fiddler on the Ground with all three of the current members and the funky bassman Peter Wolfe filling out the low end in the beginning. Matt Hinton also filled in the the low frequencies from time to time. The band gradually evolved into an acoustic hip hop group by the name of Burly Quasar. Now the band is at a point of transition from acoustic hip hop to a loud, electric power trio with the intent of bringing on the ruckus while speaking freely. A new energy necessitated a new name, The Speak Easy.
