I'm a self-taught musician with the exception of some music theory classes. I have been composing music with computers and MIDI for about 11 years as a hobby. I compose instrumental music primarily because I can't sing that well at all plus I couldn't write lyrics to save my life. Cinematic, new age, electronica, instrumental rock, symphonic-rock are some examples. I find myself creating music that takes the listener on a journey of some kind. I also enjoy putting in atmospheric effects to enhance the music (whether or not it actually does any enhancing is up to the ear of the beholder).
Why this name?
It's my real name.
Do you play live?
I played bass and sang vocals in a metal band covering Metallica and Slayer songs. We played at some private parties and a couple Halloween shows. It was some of the most fun times I've ever had in my life.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet gives everyone a chance to be heard. It gives people annonymity and provides opportunities to practice being creative and expressive. The music industry, as a business, has no doubt suffered monetarily. But as far as creativity is concerned, it gives talented (and still unknown) artists the chance to create innovative music that would never make it to the radio. The internet has given listeners an opportunity to hear that music. You just never know what kind of music you'll hear and end up really enjoying.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If offered large sums of money to write music--something that I love doing for free--I would be a fool not to accept. I'm not sure about my ability to deal with the pressure of producing music under a deadline, but that would be a nice problem to have.
Your influences?
I primarily compose cinematic/new age/film score/electronic music. My top 5 favorite score/classical composers are: Danny Elfman, Vangelis, Chip Davis, Howard Shore, and Claude Debussy. I am probably influenced the most from those five. Besides film scores and instrumental music, I am huge fan of classic rock, metal, alternative, hip-hop, old school rap, techno/trance/house, and electronica. Some of my favorite bands/artists include: Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and The Wailers, Tool, Metallica (Cliff Burton years only), Slayer, GWAR, Doctor Steel, Fear Factory, The Mars Volta, Rob Zombie, Korn, Black Sabbath, Sepultura, Primus, Buckethead (especially his albums Colma and Electric Tears), Radiohead, The Art of Noise, Gouryella, System F, Moon 5150, Dream Techno, Juno Reactor, The Prodigy, Motorcycle, Tupac, Snoop Dogg, Scarface, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Lupe Fiasco
