Harmsichord is one man's effort to experitment with the possibilities of computer-aided music production using virtual instruments, recorded audio and occasional samples.
The main goal is to have fun but much of the project is to explore the creative process as I learn the ropes of music production and, I hope, produce tunes that are enjoyable for others. I like to experiment with unusual instrumentation, electronically bending virtual instruments to create interesting sounds, and different kinds of rhythmic patterns. As a rule I don't use any prefabricated loops. I make all my own loops and samples (any samples will be public domain or open source licenced).
Improvisation plays a big role. I like to create contexts that support interesting solo leads. And I like to tell stories with the songs. Even if most of the songs are instrumental, they have a strong narrative line. Nothing really avant garde (an occasional dip maybe), most of my songs have a pop/electronica feel to them. I choose "world fusion" as the genre because I like to use exotic virtual instruments and percussion.

Why this name?
It's a silly pun on my last name that has the virtue, as far as I can tell, of not being used by anybody else.
Do you play live?
No. But I do a fair amount of jamming with friends in my basement studio. The "real" instruments I play are drums.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
You could write volumes and who knows where its going. I like it because it brings so much more creativity into play.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If they twisted my arm.

Your influences?
Myriad influences. Lately jazz - Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Yusef Lateef, etc. - and electronica - Gotan Project, Nightmares on Wax, Mouse on Mars, Air, etc. But I'm a rocker from way back. The Talking Heads probably was the most favored band of my youth.
