Heroine or Traitor is a revolving door band with Jason Andrade as it's main writer and artist. HorT is an Indie, metal, shoegaze, death rock band which finds its influences in a vast spectrum of music.
Why this name?
I was studying La Malinche or Malintzin, an indigenous indian of Mexico who helped Cortez in his conquest of the Aztec culture. Many Chicanos debate whether she was a Heroine or a Traitor. The band was originally called Malintzin:Heroine or Traitor, but I later dropped the Malintzin because I tired of peoples ignorance and lack of curiostiy. I decided to go with this title, because at that current time in my life I was being accused of being a traitor for wanting to make progress as an artist. I thought it was a "heroic" thing for me to forge ahead. The name just spoke to me.
Do you play live?
We did play live at one time, but now we/I am only a studio musician for the time being. I am not opposed to playing as a band again in the future, but right now it doesn't really work for me.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet and the mp3 have changed the industry vastly. It has both positive and negative aspects, but what I think I like is the fact that it is scaring the majors and allowing all artists to share their art with a larger worldly audience. The problem is that the audience is fickle. Not everybody out there is fabulous, but I think it takes music back to a place where it is something we share as a culture and not just as people who watch it for entertainment.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If the deal was right. It is more likely that a large indie would strike up a better deal and allow you more comfort as an artist.
Band History:
Here is a cut and dry history. I (Jason) was tired of playing in the band I was in, so I hooked up with a new drummer named Sean, an old friend Nathan and we became Heroine or Traitor. Mike of Circle Six joined later as a sound/noise manipulator, providing samples and keys.
Your influences?
My biggest influences come from Punk, Hardcore and Metal. I love the Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols, the Cure, Joy Division, Minor Threat, Black Flag, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Neurosis, The Jesus Lizard, Today is the Day, Bloodlet, Bloc Party, Bjork, Amphetamine Reptile, Unsane, Burn, Youth of Today, Judge, Gorilla Biscuits, Bad Brains, Cro-Mags, D.R.I. ... I could go on forever.
