I'm known as Phear the Lyricist just remember we don't have a name.
Why this name?
Nerd rap? Underground? Mainstream? F*** it I'm phear the lyricist aka phear the profit and hip hop is hip hop. We don't have a name.
Do you play live?
Not now. Not enough time. I will start up again soon hopefully.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It's ok. But kids rely on it too much for promotion. I mean soundclick isn't the only way to get your music heard. And you dont have to upload every single song you've ever recorded on it. haha a very valuable lesson I've learned over the past year or so..
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I'm happy doin things on my own for the time being. Regardless my music only appeals to a select few so this probably wouldn't even be an option for me.
Band History:
One of the first songs I ever recorded was me rapping over a stolen beat. Just so happened the guy who's beat I stole it from hit up my message board and basically said what the f*** is your problem jackin beats..blah blah.. Just so happened that guy was motherf***in orikal. He introduced me to other people who had the same motives as me as far as music goes..and that's basically how I got into the group known as PGC. Before I was rappin with them I was rappin with my friend from high school ya'll know him as k-nice. I recorded my first song ever at his house and basically had no intentions of ever recording anything until he told me had the equipment. Everything else is pretty much history. Almost everyone I've collabed with have been either K-nice, Dirtyhands, members of PGC, or random heads who hit up my message board. Other then that nothing really outside my little inner circle. Haha I'm not one to collab on like 50 people's tracks and 50 mixtapes in a year spittin the same line repeatedly till someone notices. Never really been into that.
Your influences?
Sage Francis, Cannibal Ox, Mr. lif(people say i sound like him..wtf.),Jakki and Copywrite, LL Cool J(from back in the day), Nas, Gangstarr, Mos Def,Talib Kweli, Common, Akrobatik,Wu Tang Clan, Black sheep and the whole native tongues crew, and last but not least Non Phixion
Favorite spot?
Northern Va cuz that's where I grew up at.
Equipment used:
Notebook,Life experiences, and my own opinions and way of seeing things, cheap mic for promo tracks/expensive equipment for album/compilation tracks.
Anything else...?
I went from my sh*** talkin phase, to my political phase, and finally my deep reflective phase..i'm just tryin to be me and breath new life into what many feel is a dying part of hip hop...the part of hip hop where people innovated out of the love for the music and culture. Me is all i can be. Peace.
