Hi, my name is Michael Matteo. I'm from Long Island, New York. I've been writing and performing music since high school. I was in a couple of bands throughout those days. At the same time, I was starting to mess around with electronic music using programs like Fruity Loops and Acid. After the bands fizzled out, I went strictly electronic. In 2003, I created the alias NEOREV and spent the next couple of years trying to perfect an album's worth of tunes. All went south when my computer crashed and three years worth of music was blinked out of existence, except for some unmixed/unfinished demos burnt to disc. It was in 2006 where it started to pick up the pace. I bought some new toys to play with and eventually played some gigs. Promoted myself and uploaded songs on various websites and forums. Here I am now, I'm running mainly Reason with a touch of Fruity Loops. I was just introduced to Ableton and have been dabbling with that.
Why this name?
NEOREV is two words cut down and shoved together. NEO meaning "new" and REV is short for "revolution." And there you have it... New Revolution=NEOREV. Originally my alias was The Hypnotic Impulse. I used it from '99 to '03 when I switched over to NR because in an online competition someone already entered a track under the alias "Hypnotic Circulation" and thought it was just too close. So I changed it. It's kind of a funny story.
Do you play live?
Yes, but would love to do more gigs. I played several times at a local bar/venue on Long Island, NY and a rave called ENERGIZE in Ronkonkoma, NY in '07 with Delirium, Jen Mas, and Atomic Babies headlining it. I got to play an hour on the main stage and man, oh, man that subwoofer was gigantic. I mean wow. The sound system was off the hook. To hear my music thump like that was amazing. I would love to do it again!
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I think it's great. The old industry model is dead, get over it. This is the new era. New technology calls for new ways of connecting with your audience. Music lovers, such as myself, are sick of being ripped off. People get big off the internet everyday with sites like myspace and youtube. It's all there. Underground bands just have to bust their ass, get out there, play some shows, put stuff up online, find the right places to promote, get connected, and get the support from fans. Sounds like a lot, eh? Well, it's what you got to do.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Of course. Who wouldn't? If it let me play in front of people and got my name out there and didn't jeopardize me as an artist... BRING IT!!!
