Ancient People are a 4 piece, occasionally 5 piece band, who play a mixture of covers and original music. Covers are usually R&B stuff like "Lay Around" (Ray Charles) and Motown songs like "Midnight Hour" and"Don't Fight it (Wilson Pickett).
The Line-up is:
Ally Simmons: vocals, keyboards
Martin O'Hara: vocals, guitars
(Jimmy Simmons: vocals, guitars)
Dave Wintour: bass
Ronald Beek: drums, persussion
Why this name?
The why is answered by the advanced age of the band members; with the exception of Martin who is lagging some fifteen years behind, most of them are approaching 60 or have already gotten there. Martin came up with the name (for a live recording): "Ancient People Get up and Dance."
Do you play live?
Yes, we play live. Mostly around Donegal, and yes we do like it.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
By basically cutting out the big record companies, making the industry far more friendly and less suit-orientated.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Not at our age
Band History:
Ancient People is the final product of several bands. The core - Ally, Martin and Ronald - played with each other in other setups, but also without each other in numerous other bands. They all made recordings with various bands, eg. Martin and Ronald both appear on The Paul Buckley album, while Ally and Martin made (amongst other things) a more traditional album as The Ex-Viceroys of India. Dave, who came to Donegal from England, played with various well-known bands and artists like Yes, Chicken Shack, Pretty Things, Neil Sedaka, and recorded with the likes of Roger Daltry and Ringo Starr.
Your influences?
The musical influences of the band members are quite varied and range from the Rolling Stones to Ornette Coleman, with an appreciation of R&B, Blues and Pop in between.
Favorite spot?
Can't speak for the others members, Favorite city personally, New York; favorite spot my exquistely rural present abode: Lower Ballymore in County Donegal, Ireland
Equipment used:
Ally: Korg Keyboards; Martin, both Fender and Gibson guitars; Jimmy, both Martin and Fender Guitars; Dave, Fender bass guitar; Ronald: Roland Handsonic, LP Congas, etc.
Anything else...?
No, think that's it.
