My name's J-Fev and I started rapping with a group called PS back in the summer of 06. We recorded a debut album and then I left to train for the Navy Reserve. When I came back, I had written my first solo song and had already made the beat for it while I was in training, it's called Blood and Bread and it is the story God's given me. So upon returning to my crew, we recorded some more songs and eventually released a mixtape, on which my single first appeared. PS is now halfway through a second album and I am trying to finish up my debut solo album "Not Just Another History Lesson".
Why this name?
I didn't choose it, but a guy that is a close friend of our crew decided that he was going to call me Jungle Fever. That was my rap name for most of 06 but I decided to shorten it to J-Fev since "Jungle Fever" tended to offend some darker-skinned brothers at a couple shows.
Do you play live?
I love playing for youth groups and local events.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I don't know. I'm not making music to make money or anything, I just want something alternative for kids to listen to thats doesn't cost 20-25 bucks and isn't teaching them that things like drugs and cheating on your significant other is ok. I'm tired of the same stereotypical rappers comin up to the mic and spittin verse after verse about how they like gettin drunk and wastin money in the strip clubs. There's a better image and a better way to enjoy life than going home, high and hungover after spending your paycheck on a prostitute because at the end of the night, you still feel empty.
Your influences?
I grew up listening to people like Tupac, Biggie, and Ja Rule. I liked Eminem and was a big fan of 50 when he started. I discovered some different kinda artists though and it changed my life: T-Bone, KRS, Grits, TobyMac...there are a lot of good ones. Probably the most inspiring have been John Rueben and KJ-52.
Favorite spot?
Huntington is where it's at!
Equipment used:
God's word, my heart, a pen, and a notebook
Anything else...?
Like i've said before, the lifestyle of gang bangin, buying sex drugs and alcohol just leaves you empty and broke. I went there and i lived that life. When I bottomed out, I was confused, i thought i was saved, and i wanted to end my life. God changed all that for me and He's inspired me to create a ripple in the hip hop community. So with amazing beats and words straight from God, I put the two together and make music for anyone and everyone. God bless
