Why this name?
We're looking for a NEW BAND NAME. But here's why we chose Canvas:

We see the musicians in Canvas as colors on a palette. As individual colors, we're all talented, but when our skills are used together, the music is something beyond what any of us could have imagined. Conor and Karrie were discussing names on the phone and Canvas seemed to encapsulate the unique art that each member brings to the music.
Do you play live?
We are based in Oregon and play live on the West Coast, USA ... we love it. There's nothing like sending out all-original tunes to packed venues and seeing people really into the music.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
We can get our music out to limitless people all over the world without having to be signed - it's great for bands like us who are young or play indie music especially. The kind of distribution available now with MP3s is just amazing.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Possibly.
Band History:
Guitarist Conor Miller and sax player Dan Leonardo were gigging around Oregon in their duo called Casual Sax. They asked their friend Karrie Pavish to sing with them on a couple occassions and the audience really enjoyed it. Next came the fabulous violin mistress Julie Southwell, and then Canvas further evolved by adding bassist Pat Pearsall and drummer Michael Summers, both of whom had played in another band with Conor and Dan several years before.

Since December of 2002, Canvas has been writing, rehearsing, and rough-recording tunes and now, less than a year later, have over three hours of original music that please crowds of all ages.
Your influences?
Canvas - DMB, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, anything funky or bluesy

Karrie - My musical influences include Kathleen Battle, Steven Tyler, Paula Cole, Jennifer Knapp, U2, Crystal Lewis, along with blues and classical music.

Conor - Dave Matthews Band and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones

Julie Southwell - Bluegrass, celtic, classical and world beat

Dan - I'm with Conor, I love DMB & Bela. We all went to see Bela when he was in town and received further motivation in our own musical creativity.

Pat - From a young age, I've listened to anything I can wrap my head around. From metal to jam...

Michael - Kool & the Gang, DMB
