Since beginning as a backing vocalist in pop & funk cover bands in the 1980's, Emma Hutchinson has written songs for UK a capella group Sweet Soul Sisters, started her own Hammond organ blues band and fronted the Emma Hutchinson Quintet playing new arrangements of great jazz standards.

Her new band, called simply "Emma Hutchinson", features all-original material written by herself. Described as jazzy soul, the songs are a mixture of wistful soul ballads, laid-back latin grooves and melodic funk.
Why this name?
It's the easiest way of people identifying me with my music, since I write the songs.
Do you play live?
Sure, I play live, wherever they'll give me a decent gig! I've a background in jazz so I'm really into improvising and playing with all kinds of great musicians. Singing is my emotional outlet, without it I'd probably self-combust! And playing my original stuff is very exciting, especially seeing the transition from when I first write a song on guitar to performing it live with the band.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet is a marvellous opportunity for unsigned artists like myself to get our music out there. But artists' rights need to be protected.
Your influences?
Stevie Wonder, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Bacharach & David, Motown, Beatles, Billie Holiday, the great jazz composers.
