BEFORE YOU READ ANYTHING ELSE, READ THIS:
What is a producer? What the hell is a DJ? Who knows....everything is decided by connotation. Whether I make original beats, bite beats and samples to mix, I always do something in my own artistic form. My musical goal is simply one thing: to crush connotation in hip-hop music with a sledgehammer. I have many local influences such as Edan, Insight, and the Perceptionists, and I have other influnces such as Jurassic 5 who have all tried to push hip hop's boundries in some way...and got away with it. There are people in hip hop who get slept on like benadryl that aren't defined as "hip hop" by most closed minded people that still are able to get away with their art...whether they are white and from the suburbs like me, or anyone in the middle of the country, my point is that shouldn't matter. Someone out there can still be unique and not be stereotyped as something.

Anyway, forget all of that. My name is Ben A, but you can also call me DJ Benny for all I care. I've been producing and remixing since the summer of 2003, and ocasionally been practicing with turntables since June of 2004. I'm learning piano now for all musical ventures (I also started that in summer of '04), but in hip hop specifically, a hip hop producer that knows some sort of music theory is a DEADLY WEAPON. Please believe it when I say that...look at people like DJ Shadow and RJD2...you dont see them making 3 second loops with MIDI keyboards do you? Anyway, I've been producing and remixing stuff on Acid Pro and Fruityloops 4, and they are some of the most underrated programs out there. People think Acid Pro and FL studio are really ameteur stuff, but you can do the craziest stuff with it if you know what you're doing. I also recently purchased an MPC2000XL (a drum machine, sampler, sequencer - best of the best) , and it is one of the greatest musical purchases I've ever made, despite the cost of it.

I have a remix album out now that I released in the fall of '03 (nov. 4th to be exact). It was made at a time when I was just starting out on Acid Pro and thought I was the best ever at remixing. I was also heavily influenced by the Neptunes/N.E.R.D production at that time, despite the fact if the songs they did carried any real meaning....I still like most of their production to this day, though, regardless. Despite the half and half balance between remixing outdated mainstream music and some decent underground hip hop, some things on there like a remix of Coldplay's "Clocks" made it to #1 on the soundclick alternative charts in November of 03, the month the CD was released. I was also in the top 25 unsigned artists for about a week or two of that month. It did not sell well because it was very hard to advertise to my audience, especially with it being just a remix album and not solo material, and I just didn't want to deal with it anymore. However, if you want to buy it anyway, e-mail me and I can send you a track or two off of it that you want to hear since had soundclick caught me twice for posting them myself. I can give you further payment instructions later if you do want to make a purchase. Here is the tracklist of my first remix album "Your eardrums aren't ready no more: The Remixes Vol. 1."

Why this name?
People called me DJ Benny in middle school because I could do scratching and beatboxing techniques with my voice, kinda like rahzel. This does not really mean I'm an official DJ, many people dont realize that. However, I recently did get turntables of my own and I'm workin at gettin more official for all y'all ;)
Do you play live?
I finally did a gig. With my brother. The music that I DJ'ed and produced for him is self explanatory:

How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Well, it sure screws the industry over, doesn't it?
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Hell yes, that is if they'res not controlling A&R's behind my style and making me act fake. Major record labels are all about the money these days, not the music, so I gotta make sure if I do sign with a label (which is highly unlikely at the moment) that they respect the music first.
Band History:
I am in a band, but this is my solo page. Material and a soundclick site from the actual band I'm in, the Vinylins, will be posted up later this summer.
Your influences?
UNDERGROUND HIP HOP: Perceptionists (Akrobatik and Mr. Lif - includes their solo stuff), Edan, Insight (Updated Software v. 2.5 = my benchmark record for looking at hip hop and its industry), Virtuoso, 7L, MF Doom / Madvillian, K-Os, Jurassic 5 (c'mon people you gotta love Chali2na), Atmosphere, Blackalicious and Quannum Projects (Latryx, Lyrics Born, Maroons, APSCI), Most of the Def Jux crew, inc. RJD2 and others. ELECTRONICA: Kenna, Crystal Method, Fatboy Slim, Daft Punk, DJ Shadow, The Prodigy RAP/ROCK: Red Hot Chili Peppers, RATM, Linkin Park (you'd be surprised, their first 2 CD's are the crazy - and they arent what you think they are), Chronic Future, earlier Limp Bizkit, Audible Mainframe, Cypress Hill.. ...and basically any other kind of musical act or group that isn't fake or superficial (could apply to underground and mainstream), is credible, and suites my tastes well. There are many more musical influences I know I like but haven't listed, and I'm sure I will have more influences in the future. Oh, totally forgot my international people: big ups to Large the Dustee Pad, Mitchell Brothers,Kano, Mike Skinner (in most cases anyway),Rachid Wallas, One Self, Roots Manuva, Herbaliser....listening to international hip hop recently has been some of the best things I've done, influences me with knowing different perspectives on the genre. I'm also influenced by the occasional jazz, funk, or soul track every once in a while.
Favorite spot?
Ummm...well one of the favorites that I've actually been to is NYC, and thats pretty much it. San Francisco's Metreon is a wicked awesome place also. And I just can't forget downtown Boston, DA BACK BAY AND BEYOND!!
