A 22-year-old Brazilian singer-songwriter who writes songs in English, but is not ashamed of his country nor of his mother tongue, despite what some may say. Rock with acoustic and electronic influences, with touches of experimentalism.
Why this name?
It's just a sort-of translation of my real name (Guilherme), which is kind of unpronounceable by the English speakers (I suppose). The surname is identical, though (the "di" is read as in "dice").
Do you play live?
I've played live in some rare occasions, and most of them were awesome. Playing live is such a great experience. I plan to perform live much more in the near future. If my stuff gets some recognition, perhaps a tour around some places in USA or Europe would be in order. Who knows? (laughs)
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
In many ways... I would never have reached the musical status I reached without the Internet. People from the other side of the world have already listened to my songs and enjoyed them, which is amazingly rewarding. Therefore, I achieved that by myself, at home. It's a big change. Radiohead also showed how things are getting more and more complicated with their "In Rainbows" album. The value of music is also changing. With the Internet, now artists can understand how the rest of the world sees their music, with no record labels in between. Times are changing, more and more.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Depending on their terms, of course. As a friend of mine would say, "why not?"
Band History:
I've been playing guitar since I was 12, even though I was not really interested in music by then. It was a process that grew with age. From a certain moment my guitar playing developed quite fast, but I actually only started songwriting a few years ago. In the past two years I joined in a few bands, but unfortunately they disbanded after a couple of gigs. I've been practicing some other instruments, like the piano and the harmonica. In late February 2008 I released my debut album "Self" on the Internet. It was done entirely in my room, with little equipment. It's pretty rough, but I'm definitely quite proud of it. It was supposed to be much more of a personal project than a commercial one, but I'm really glad it has been praised by listeners. It makes me honored, even.
Your influences?
Zillions of styles. I'm fond of the Brit-pop movement, bands like Radiohead and The Verve, plus classic stuff like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Stones, Beatles, U2, REM, to name a few. I also spare some moments for classical pieces, electronic music, reggae, funk, even tango. It may not be easy to notice, but I'm also heavily influenced by Brazilian music. People like Chico Buarque, Lenine and Os Mutantes will always be in my heart.
Favorite spot?
My small studio at home, in São Paulo. Or an intimate venue with a nice crowd anxiously expecting me to step on stage. (laughs)
Equipment used:
The "Self" sessions, for example, were done with nothing but a laptop, a mixer, a microphone, two acoustic guitars, a harmonica and a couple of small percussion pieces, like a tambourine and a shaker. Most of the additional instruments was created with MIDI programming, via software like Guitar Pro and Fruity Loops.
Anything else...?
Thanks to everyone who supports me and my music. Hope you enjoy "Self" and my future works. And if you'd like to see me perform, let me know, as I'm currently planning a tour and I'm looking for cities where my music would be welcome. Love to you all. :)
