My name is David Scarth. I live in York, England. This site presents a selection of music I've written for film, live theatre and other media. You will find music in orchestral, rock, jazz and ethnically-influenced styles.
Many of the film scores presented here were written for films directed by Dave Cave, including 'Julie', 'The No Place' and, most recently, 'Day of the Broken Dolls'. The live theatre productions for which I have written music include 'Dracula' and 'Whitechapel' for Rhesus Productions. Also included are some projects written for my composition course.

Your influences?
I have a wide range of musical tastes and that is reflected in the diversity of the pieces presented here. I am a member of classical guitar group The York Guitar Quartet (also on Soundclick and at www.yorkguitarquartet.com), for whom I also compose. I play electric bass in various jazz and rock settings. I studied the technique of film composition with Music for the Media (www.musicforthemedia.co.uk) and have a Diploma in Film Composition with the University of Los Angeles.
Equipment used:
I compose and record using a PC-based system: Sonar, Kontakt and Sibelius software. I try to use real instruments and voices wherever possible in the foreground and synthetic instruments, if necessary, in the background. This allows me to produce a professional-sounding result on a limited budget. I have been lucky to engage the services of many of my musician friends on these recordings and, of course, play on them myself. I play a range of 4, 5,and 6-string basses: fretted, fretless, acoustic and electric. I also use a MIDI bass guitar controller for some of the synthesised performances.
Anything else...?
Many of these pieces are meant to be heard in the context of the moving picture. I am hoping to increase the numbers of videos on this page, but it is not always possible to get copyright clearance to do so. I can, however, supply a DVD with more video footage (for private viewing only) to interested persons. Email me for further information.
