Why this name?
Universal is short for Universal Truth. I chose that because Immortal Technique (an artist I respect to the highest) said, "universal truth is not measured in mass appeal". I thought that phrase precisely and concisely described the way I felt about myself as an artist. Not to mention, the phrase is undeniably true.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It has clearly reduced album sales in the markets of college-aged people and younger, especially in hip hop and/or rap music. But by the same token it has made that music more accessible for a wider range of people. It has also helped to level the playing field for independent artists, allowing many to reach audiences outside of their local area; which may not have been feasible for most artists before.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes
Your influences?
Almost everybody and everything. I love to sample soul music, reggae, jazz, modern r&b, country, and rock. I've even sampled celtic music. But, I have just as many original compositions as I do sample-based. I just still end up using the music concepts and principles of all those genres. I end combining different genres on the same track, but its very subtle and doesn't clash.
