Daylight District is an all original, inventive four piece band from Florida. Our sound is a mixture of Hip Hop and Indie rock, some people might call it "Alternative Hip Hop." We blend composition and improvisation in our songs both live and recorded.
Why this name?
Our band name represents a couple ideas to us. First, one of our biggest influences is J Dilla. He is connected to a compilation series called "Dirty District" that was named describing areas of Detroit. Being that the Detroit hip hop sound is a big influence to us and we are from the Sunshine State, we chose "Daylight District" to represent us. Daylight also has positive associations with it, as does our music.
Do you play live?
Yes, Many people have said that our live show is when we are most in our element. We bring tight emotionally charged performances of our songs. While spontaneously breaking into improvisation, at times without the listener ever knowing where the composition ended. Also, many freestyles with various MC's have taken place. As well as we welcome guest musicians.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet represents the next phase in music. While it brings much more global exposure, it also is a way to get lost in the shuffle if you are not unique. Luckliy, we don't have that problem.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Even though many have become jaded with the industry, we have faith that real music is gonna last and rise to the top. If a major label is where we end up, we hope to retain our artist integrity. We would love the sponsership and marketing that comes with a major, while the potential for over-exposure and "selling out" exists. However with our sound being so eclectic, an Indie seems more appropriate.
Band History:
Daylight District is a four piece band. Since 2004, DD has been creating a unique brand of organic indie/hip hop--seamlessly fusing composition and improvisational methods. Frank Friend is composer/keyboardist/MC, Aaron Tobin plays drums, Tim Heller plays bass, & Paul Solorzano plays Guitar and sings.
The band is scheduled to release a full-length album “Beautiful, Historic” in early 2008. It's the band's second release to date. Both were engineered by Greg Marchak at Audio Lab studios in Tampa, Florida.
On Daylight District's first E.P., “This is Now:”
“It only has six songs on it, but they are all excellent tracks” – Kayla Anderson (Connections, Orlando)
“…for such a brief record, it's impressive indeed.” – Mark Sanders
(Weekly Planet, Tampa)
With the new album on the way, 2008 will be a busy year for Daylight District. Many live shows will be performed to support this release while constantly working hard creating new music.
