As I gaze into the crowd the weight of 700 plus spectators gravitating all attention towards me begins to overcome my mental homeostasis. My pulse begins to increase, my left eyelid begins to spasm, and my stomach begins to quiver. I have entered another atmosphere, an alien elevation much greater than my own. At this altitude neurons fire a little quicker, blood flows a little faster, lungs palpitate a little stronger, depth perception is weakened, senses are heightened, and claustrophobia becomes imminent. This is the cloud Lucifer fell from, the plateau Abraham placed Isaac upon, the pinnacle Moses ascended upon, the stomping grounds of Solomon, the palace of David, and the hill of Joshua and Caleb. It is Pharaoh’s throne, the Alter in Heaven, Mount Moriah, the Wilderness, the Kings Palace, the plains of Megiddo, and Mount Sinai. This is the place where one must choose life or death. Choose blessings or cursings. Choose “Thy will be done” or “My will be done.” Choose to be visible or transparent. Choose the truth or a lie. This is every time I get on stage, and this is my most exciting and unusual experience.
If you haven’t already ascertained from my introductory paragraph, the most exciting experience I’ve ever encountered occurs every time I rap in front of anyone. Whether it be 1 or 1,000, every time I open my mouth to “spit” or rhythmical express myself, it is always exciting to say the least. You see I’m not the average lyricist. I don’t choose to use my ability to express or glorify various nefarious topics such as shooting, gangs, or death. Neither is the girth of my poetry indigenous to delightful subjects such as being happy, having fun, or the good life. Rather, the core of all of my rhythmic dictions can be stated in 2 simple words………Christ alone. Now, there in lays the epicenter of my excitement. The understanding that mere mention of such an audacious subject will cause 9 out of 10 of my listeners to have a preconceived prejudice to reject my allocution is a well welcomed challenge that makes this experience all the more exhilarating.
Most exciting of all is the challenge to address all my listeners within the time constraints given to me. I attempt to be relevant to the culture while speaking as an outcast of the culture. I strive to be palatable to the flesh while praying for spiritual emesis. I’m challenged to feed both man and child from the same plate, to be aware of the spiritual maturity of my audience and address them as such. Help the blind to see, the lame to walk, and the dead to live, all while remaining visibly transparent before the thrown of grace.
All in all, my most exciting experience can be summed up in this:
I speak to dying men, as a dead man dying to speak of a living God who died for this entire world.
