The Carter Trio is one of the gifted young jazz acts in the Washington, D.C. area. The band of brothers consists of Roland Carter, on piano; Rashaan Carter, on bass; and Russell Carter, on drums. Roland Carter is a fifteen year old bop pianist who cites Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, and Red Garland as his top influences. Rashaan Carter is a seventeen year who has played with Gary Thomas, Webster Young, and in concert along side Chris Potter. He cites Paul Chambers, Ray Brown, Dave Holland, and Ron Carter as his influences. Russell Carter is twenty years old and currently attends Howard University as a jazz studies major and drummer and percussionist in their jazz band. He cites Tony Williams, Max Roach, and Jeff 'Tain' Watts as his main influences. We sincerely hope you do enjoy. Thank you!
Why this name?
We choose this name because it is the easiest possible name to think of and it shows we're all brothers.
Do you play live?
We play in clubs all around Washington, D.C. and the East Coast Jazz Festival.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I feel that it hurt and helps the industry in many ways. Personally in earlier jazz I find no problem i n free downloads because most jazz musician sold their royalties for an upfront price therefore you're only hurting the record companies that took advantage of these musicians. In modern jazz I feel it is important to buy music because in jazz for some musicians it’s a struggle to put food on the table therefore these musicians need every penny.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes, I would because there is but so much promotion an indy can do.
