Abysmalia is a band that started out as a project of Jouni Koskela. So far, bass player Antti Jylhä has joined the ranks permanently. The music is inspired by the surrounding environment and freedom of self-expression and there fore is not strictly limited to any sub-category of the metal genre.
Why this name?
I can't remember how the actual title was originated, but it had tortured my mind throughout a handful of years. Back when I was a rebellious teenager in my worst phase, I drew evil sketches of various logos for imaginary metal bands - I can't recollect most of them afterwards, but - as symmetry in logos was 'the thing' - Abysmalia was one thing that looked greatest and seemed to have limitless ways for its appearance. Even though I'm not using the initial sketch as the official logo (yet?), I still have the A3-sized drawing somewhere in my apartment.
Do you play live?
Due to the limited amount of bandmembers in this group, I don't have the possibility to be constantly alert for possible live appearances, but within time I hope the group adds up some extra fingers to make live apprearances even remotely possible. But, I like to take these things slow, so who the hell knows what might happen in the future!?!
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
In the 21st century, internet is a powerful tool for indie artists to spread the word about their music without the artists having to take care of every tedious act involving the managing and marketing, which usually doesn't interest the artist him-/herself. Internet also allows people to work on their own visions and ambitions, which makes the music more genuine. Mp3, however, is a two-bladed sword. Surely the rapid spreading of the rip-off culture along with the easy transfer and multiplying of the format together mess up the amounts bands sell their records, but then again - as it is statistically proved: people who download most, they also buy the most. Basically I think that it's just another way for the artists to market their own music and possibly have a full control over it.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
As long as the label doesn't interfere with my visions and force me to do something I don't want to. :)
But on the other hand, major labels have superior managing and marketing assets which place the artist to a significant display. Personally, though, I'm not a big fan of monopoly in music industry. It is always biased exploitation and people do anything out of greed whenever they are given the chance. So, the answer to this question is - in my conditions are met, then yes.

Band History:
The initial idea came around 2002 when I composed a riff with my friend that later ended up being the main riff on "The Sewage of Lies" -track. Since then, I have been writing more or less constantly both music and lyrics for this band as my personal quest.
Your influences?
There's a lot of them, because I tend to absorb something here and there without trying to sound like anything already existing (don't we all?). However, the most important musical influence I have received from Meshuggah, Cynic, Thorns, Emperor, Disillusion, Scarve, Darkane, Opeth, The Haunted and Death.
Favorite spot?
The cozy 60 square meters and four walls of my apartment.
Equipment used:
Behringer and Shure microphones, Dean and Wolf Guitars, Ernie Ball's Music Man basses, Line6 outputs, Yamaha keyboards and Drumkit from Hell / Superior Drummer 2.0 drummers. :)
Anything else...?
Thanks to all who share a minute or two in order to get acquainted with my music!
