The new album, DIVERSITY, expresses exactly that. Acumen shows its true colors, ...all of them. Acumen diversifies stylistically, musically ,and lyrically carrying the listener through all extremes of thoughts and sounds. Songs like "One Eye Closed" contain subtle complexities such as two entirely different guitar parts using completely different chord changes and rhythms that counter each other yet it sounds perfectly normal, like a musical version of an MC Escher drawing. Or "You're On Your Own" which casts a vision of a European cafe', weaving instruments like a Greek Bazouki and Mandolin around each other. The album also rocks out with songs "Drowning In The Backwash", "One Thousand Miles", and "Over, Done With Gone", then dives deep into Progressive Rock with "Sarah's Dance". Quirky pop songs with uncommon structures like "No Surprise", and "Tonight" counter the one and only straight forward pop song "Hearts". The diversity doesn't stop here. There's the jam driven song "Too Many Choices", the Space Rockish "Queen Of Denial" and emotionally driven finale "What You Believe" that rounds out the album and brings it all to center.
Why this name?
Acumen was the first word in the dictionary that made any sense to me as a band name.
Do you play live?
We're currently touring in the Midwest and East Coast. We'll be doing some dates out West and the South. We will be heading to Europe in April.

I love to visit different cities large and small.
A very fond special moment is playing before a full house at the Viper Room in Hollywood, CA. Then partying and sleeping on Santa Monica Beach after the show.

Not so fond. Being hit by a drunk driver on I-40 on the way to a show in Albuquerque, NM which paralyzed our then female singer Spydir K. (SPYDIR however, though still paralyzed, is doing much better and can not only be heard on our "Out Of Balance" CD but the new one too! She co-wrote some of the songs & she still sings her ass off!)
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Great way to get the band introduced to lots of folks without spending tons of cash! Before the internet and mp3s it took, and still does with "traditional" avenues, great big budgets that kept bands from getting paid from labels. And almost impossible for independents to market to the #s the interenet allows.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes, but terms would be quite different.
Band History:
I (Dimitrious) formed Acumen in Los Angeles in 1988. We've released 1 EP cassette "James & The Acumen , and three full length albums (CD only)- "THINK" (93) & "OUT OF BALANCE" (97)and new album, "DIVERSITY". Acumen has toured consistantly since the release of "THINK" in January of 1993.
Acumen's music is a culmination of song writing efforts of Dimitrious James and original song writing partner David P. Bedinghaus, which developed into it's own unique approach, style, and niche.
Acumen's live line up has seen numerous changes since it's original line up in '88. ACUMEN now includes female singer Cyndy Teseniar, Drummer Tim O'Neill, Guitarist Justin Todhunter, and Bassist Jared Manker.
Your influences?
Extreme range including: The Beatles, John Lennon, The Monkees, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Yes, Kansas, Frank Zappa, Deep Purple, CSNY, Led Zepplin, Moody Blues, Perry Como, Aerosmith, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and a few others.
