Silaba is a musical group from Senegal. Silaba's music is a mix between roots music and traditional African music. Sadoo (lead singer and guitarist) and Lamine Kouyaté ( lead singer and Kora player) are the main actors in the band along with great percussionits from Senegal.
Why this name?
Silaba means "the long African road" in Malinke language. It is also the name of the first chord of the Kora, the traditional harp used by "Griots".Silaba could be seen as a start of a collaboration between different cultures with the same goals: to mix cultures and generations and help in our own way the promotion of roots music and help African move forward.
Do you play live?
Silaba already played at the World Culture Festival in Dublin, Ireland in 2005. They also play in Dakar and in France.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Quote from Sadoo, one of the lead singer: " A lot of "new artists" can express themselves. The fans they can easily listen to their artist. It's really good for communication. Internet why not if the public can appreciate the music and the artists they can eat"
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Quote from Sadoo (one of the lead singer): "show me the contract and I will tell you"
Band History:
A year before the recording (2002), Sadoo was living in Ouakam (Senegal), and working as an assitant in Yes recording studio. Although the studio specialized in Rap recording, this is where Sadoo met Lamine Kouyate who was a friend of the owner. Lamine Kouyate is a "griot": a singer an a muscian who plays Kora (the traditional African harp).Sadoo has been overwhelmed with Lamine's talent and ability to play all sorts of music style that they started to rehearse together on Sadoo's reggae songs. Whether in life or music, they get along very well because they aim at the same thing: to always better themselves in their art and help things move forward for Africa. As a results they decided to launch their first common project: Silaba.
