play lo-fi play hi-fi  Can I Pump Yours?
having created whimsical and heartfelt phrases since itty-bitty childhood days and having co-created, played, and sang with the kava boys band for many years and bilos, the time has come for barefoot bob to share his original songs - and, fortunately, the venues and avenues for sharing continue to grow with me...so now it's just me, my songs (to laugh, to cry, to ask yourself why), my LEFT-HANDED (and don't you forget it) acoustic-electric Agile, whatever friends are joining me (and making me sound better than i am), and an occasional ripping kazoo solo.
Why this name?
I've been called barefoot bob since i lived in a little village in the interior of the main island of Fiji. It rained all of the time (literally), so being barefoot and covered in mud were just a way of life - but when a slight dissipation of the water level would let a truck break across the bridge to head to the city, friends and i would forget about such things and head for some fun. when we got to the city, some snobbish city people would sneer at the lowly barefoot, mud-covered people of the hills...but would always wonder why one of them was a kaivulagi (foreigner)...soon people started to talk about me and say, "oh - that's just barefoot bob coming down from the hills" (and the name has preceded me everywhere i've gone since...).
Do you play live?
i'm currently at Arnold's Beach Bar in Waikiki every Thursday night and am soon to be at Hank's Pub in Honolulu every Saturday night. As co-founder of the Oahu Songwriters Group (oSg), i'm co-host and featured performer at the songwriter showcase the last Tuesday of every month at the rRed Elephant in Chinatown and am part of a team of songwriter/performers at the Kim Taylor Riece Gallery on the First Friday of every month in Chinatown. Love it. The most special moments happen every time that i see that someone is actually listening intently to the lyrics (smiling at all of the right times, crying at all of the right times, and, most importantly, laughing at all of the right times!).
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It makes it much easier for us to share music and much more difficult for us to filter it.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I'm not big on hypothetical questions. If a major label has a contract in hand for me, I'll make the decision at the time.
Your influences?
i'm influenced by any event that strikes me as funny (they are everywhere!); as touching; as something that would otherwise send me into a downward spiral if i didn't have songwriting and power chords to reframe such negativity. i'm influenced by people who make me think and feel and emote (and gag?) - and by occasional refills.
Favorite spot?
The same answer as what's my favorite among the songs that i've written - THE NEXT ONE! (but it's hard to beat honolulu!)
Equipment used:
I'm big on the cowbell.
Anything else...?
I like duct tape. And chilli sauce. But not together.
