Boonie Mayfield a/k/a Boon Doc (born Solomon James Vaughn on April 19, 1983) is an upcoming hip-hop producer/artist currently based in Denver, Colorado. Despite residing in a city that has been virtually shunned by the music industry, Boon Doc has managed to defeat the odds by generating a buzz through the internet with the use of his impactful Youtube videos and cutting edge beats. Fellow producers, artists and admirers around the world have constantly given him praise for his consistency, energy, style, soulfulness and humble attitude. Boon Doc's style clearly resembles hip-hop's "golden age" sound with an update of off-the-wall sample chopped melodies, intoxicating rhythms and hypnotic basslines. Although his personal favorite style of producing ranges within smooth, introspective, street/grimey and neo soul tracks, he proves to be extremely diverse with the ability to produce contemporary r&b, pop, club tracks and house. With the mass interest he has sparked around the world, Boon Doc is sure to become a household name in the near future.

Born and raised in a small town from the south end of Colorado Springs, CO, Boon Doc grew a deep passion for the hip-hop music and culture at the tender age of 7. Being exposed to the likes of hip-hop groups; A Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Kid N' Play, Leaders of the New School, Lords of the Underground and many others, quickly filled his heart with dreams of being a part of the innovative movement in his future. From his early childhood all the way through his teens, the young Boon Doc could never be seen without headphones pressed to his ears, knodding away to the music he loved.

At the age of 14, Boon Doc decided to quit all involvement with sports and began to master his first hip-hop artform as a popper/b-boy. Although Boon Doc had incredible skills as a dancer, he only enjoyed it as a hobby and never sought out to dance professionally. While he was still in the midst of his dancing adventures, Boon Doc began writing poetry and soon evolved into an emcee. His love for rhyming and freestyling eventually outgrew his passion for dancing after a few years and sparked his decision to take rapping seriously as a career choice. After graduating from high school, he chose not to go to college and worked at random jobs to try paying for studio time. Throughout those years, Boon Doc went through tear-jerking and pride crushing struggles that taught him the heart-breaking lessons of trying to follow a dream. But despite the pain, the trials and tribulations only made him stronger, wiser and more creative.

During his involvement in a local hip-hop duo and independent record label from years 2002-2006, Boon Doc and his former rapping partner grew tired of depending on other local producers that couldn't manage to create tracks that fit their taste and style. They invested in the Reason software program and began making their own beats and selling unused tracks from their catalogue online. After 4 years of making beats on Reason, Boonie May invested in an MPC which helped him truly find his niche and natural style. With his newfound style and years of experience, he has set many creative and business goals as a producer.

"Of course I want to become a major producer in the game, but not just some producer who makes one or two hit songs for every artist who's hot at the time. I want to produce full albums! Not just albums... but classic albums.... like DJ Premier, Dr. Dre, J Dilla, Pete Rock and RZA have. I don't want to only be able to flip through a catalogue full of a bunch of artists I've only made a couple tracks for. I want to be able to pop in ENTIRE ALBUMS... and say, I produced this... ALL of this."

Today, Boon Doc takes the art and career choice of producing more seriously than rapping now, but still has plans of becoming an established emcee in the future as well.

"I have a lot of talents.... and I enjoy doing them all. But, honestly... I've found producing to be what I enjoy most when it comes to music. There's just always something new to do and create. Who knows if I'll make it as a rapper? But, I know damn well that I can and will make it as a producer. The beauty in the business of producing is that there is no age issues! I'm still young, but time flies before you know it. If you're over 30 years old rapping and still haven't made it yet... you'll have an EXTREMELY tough time getting a deal at that age. As a producer... it don't matter how old you are. As long as you got the connections and you're making heat, it's not a problem!.... I got plenty of time (laughs). I think I can make it rapping as well.... we'll just have to see. But, I definitely know talent when I hear it. I know how to find some GOLD! If I can't make it rapping... I'll just scout the one's who can and produce for them."-- Boonie Mayfield
Why this name?
Colorado is pratically the "boonies" of the Hip-Hop world and entertainment industry in general. Mayfield derives from my favorite artist of all-time, Curtis Mayfield.
