Det0nator was born and raised in Vancouver BC Canada. Det0nator is an aspiring dj/remixer/beatmaker. His interest in deejaying started back in the early 80's. He was introduced to the bboy element of hiphop (breakdancing) as a child. His love for djing started with scratching and mixing when he saw videos of Run DMC, Herbie Hancock and Afrika Bambataa. In the early 90's he purchased his first radio shack dj mixer, an old belt drive turntable and a simon harris battle record. Hip hop and bboying was his biggest influence growing up as a 1st generation Canadian Filipino. His tastes later expanded to the world of electronica. He wanted to learn the process of making music. Instead of spending 25 grand on school he bought equipment and taught himself how to play. He purchased his first workstation midi keyboard a Korg X3. Years went by as he deejayed parties and events on and off but always kept a low profile. He has been developing his skills in production, remixing and deejaying.
Band/artist history
I dont have much of a history as an artist. Until Tomorrow is actually the first of my originals. Up till now ive been making remixes of other peoples works and working as a DJ. I hope to work on enough original material to make my first album. As i mentioned in my introduction I started doing this in late 89. Ive learned alot and im still learning alot. I went from using two technics 1200 turntables and a mixer to sequencing on a Korg X3 Workstation synth to using Denon dn1000 dj cd players and now using acid/ableton live and now DVS systems like Torq and Serato. Now after learning all these instruments and tools im still learning to put it all together as a means to create music.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes. Ive deejayed live at parties and events on and off since 93. Ive done some live pa as well. I also run an internet radio station which I sometimes do random mix sessions on at http://Urbanbreaks.com/
Your musical influences
afrika bambataa, rundmc, ztrip, c2c, rakim, moldover, aphrodite, dj bailey, roni size, benny page, high contrast, cold cut, tiesto, bt, dj shadow, qbert, dj craze, etc I grew up mostly on hiphop, r&b and reggae. In my later half of my life I developed a taste for drum and bass, breaks and other electronic music. Id say my music is urban electronic oriented. Im not trying to fall into any one genre. As a remixer i think that gives me an artistic license to be more versatile with my style verses an artist who is known and expected for a particular style.
What equipment do you use?
I use Ableton Live 8, Cakewalk Sonar XL, Korg Triton, Yamaha Rm1x, Yamaha Cs1x, Turntables, DJ CD Players, Reason 5, Maudio Torq 2 /w Xponent dj midi console and Connectiv Digital Vinyl System, alot of software synths and fx. Too many to list.
