ME PHI ME is the original Hip-Hop Fraternity of ONE.

Established in 1989 as a reaction to the emerging negative gangsta rap and empty calorie pop rappers of the time, ME PHI ME's focus was always to push the definition of rap music.

If everyone else used samples, ME PHI would use live instruments. If everyone else shouted, ME PHI would whisper. They talked drugs and violence, ME PHI talked love and peace. They made 3:45 radio songs; ME PHI made 11 minute jam songs.

"Individuality" is the key. Positively reinforcing the Truth that to follow the crowd denies the great potential of each person's uniqueness.
Why this name?
ME PHI ME is an homage to traditional Black greek fraternities and sororities like Alpha Phi Alpha, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta and others -- with a twist.

When director, Spike Lee, did the revolutionary film, Skool Daze, he bought to pop consciousness a reality of Black college life and the identity issues that ensue. ME PHI ME is both a celebration of the family of the frat, while simultaneously the messenger of anti-group think.
Do you play live?
Last tour was with Sade. Played everywhere around the world. A ME PHI ME live show is a spectacle of hip-hop at it's finest. Favorite moment was at the Fox in Detroit when all the fam came to one show.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
No change, the cream will rise and the crap will sink and sometimes the crap will rise leaving everybody scratching their heads.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes.

ME PHI ME's 1st CD, "ONE" was released on BMG/RCA Records and sold over a quarter of a million records domestically.

The experience was not problem free, but in hindsight could be graded as an 8 out of 10. 1 point is substracted for internal shortages (not the label's fault) and 1 point is subtracted for the nature of big conglomerates. Beyond that, the people of RCA and BMG were sincere, well-intentioned, and dedicated.

The cash, human and political resources of a major are impossible to beat when they work as they should. Many people who put down labels either have never been on a major label or have not fully taken accountability for their own inadequacies (management, legal, accounting, etc.).

The biggest downside of a major label is the legal, artistic, and financial limitations. That said, 100% of zero is zero. If you can negotiate a flexible deal with reasonable options, it's a win-win relationship for all.
