as long as i can remember, i've been around music. my dad was in a touring band and was a session musician in nashville for a while, when i was real little. he's a really good f***ing drummer.
i was honestly too young to remember alot of it, but i do remember they would practice in our basement and get in crazy fights. which i didn't think about then, but now that i am, it's really striking. that kind of passion, you know.
anyways, it's always been a part of my brain, so i can't really pinpoint an exact moment when it came alive for me or whatever. as far as my recordings and stuff goes, the first instrument i learned how to play was the tuba in school band, and then around 13 i picked up the bass, and then i started playing guitar regularly my first semester of college.
i first started recording on a piece of sh*** laptop with sound recorder and a headset phone mic. eventually it died and i lost alot of master tracks, but whatever. i've written so much since then, my style has changed so much.
Why this name?
mrs x: so, what does abbadon mean? and why did you pick it?
andrew: well, ever since high school i thought that if i ever actually started any solo work, i would do it under the moniker "nothing revolutionary", which i did for a long time. but, uh, as i started to evolve and progress as an artist, i realized that what it was now was not what it was in high school, so. i've got a few things that strike me as titles for myself; "kwisatz haderach", "the son of perdition", "tom o'bedlam"...there are a few more that i can't remember. anyway, abbadon has always been on that list. it roughly means "the destroyer" in hebrew.
Do you play live?
as it stands now, i play an open mic at the thirsty hippo in hattiesburg once in a blue moon, but i have really severe stage fright, to the point where i get pretty ill. anyway, i want to start playing around more, which sounds counterintuitive, but bear in mind that people don't always come to open mic to hear you specifically, as opposed to a solo show or opening gig or whatever. it's easier that way.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
i think there's just a much smoother dissemination of material. and of course people love money, so they get pissy when you don't pay them, which is understandable i guess. my logic is that i'm going to record these songs anyway, and if other people want to listen to them and have them, they can have them. being payed would be nice, that's not what i'm saying, but i didn't start playing to get paid.
all the sweet babes are a different can of worms entirely. and by that i mean i havn't seen nearly enough return in that department and i'm mad about it.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
you know, part of me says yes, and part says no. probably not, though.
Favorite spot?
i love hattiesburg most of the time, and i used to love the mississippi coast before the storm. i still love it, but it hurts to go down there, even now.
Equipment used:
for these, i used a fairly standard condenser mic (which i can't remember the make of. it's my job's set up, i just use it after hours) and sound forge 5 to record, and audacity to edit/mix. i'm a fan of the simple stuff.
