Bob Lichty is a singer/songwriter, producer/engineer who has been in the industry way too long to remember. He has produced and worked with with dozens of artists in the Midwest. Bob performs solo shows and shows with his band, The Minor Profits.
Why this name?
The Minor Profits is just a spoof of a Biblical reference, as well as a business reference, as our band is made up of Christian businessmen!
Do you play live?
Both the band and I play live throughout Northern Indiana. We all love it. It is the best way to see if a song is really connecting. We, hopefully, as songwriters, all write what we know, but the hope is that what we know can carry to an event an audience member may have as well.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Oh, it has changed everything. A following can be built through the internet now, whereas it used to be go and play 200 nights a year. While nothing can take the place of that intimacy of performance, it is always intriguing to hear where your songs are being listened to.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Gosh, I'm 38 with a wonderful family, that would sure flip my life around. The joy that a label could bring is a wider distribution and ability to reach more people. But it would have to be a decision with my family and the folks I play with. And the way the labels have been going lately...I just think there is a great opportunity now to reach people through the Web, and really do this all on your own. Smaller labels with strong acts, like Aware, are still very relevant, but the larger ones had better figure things out pretty quickly, or they will just end up alienating everyone!
Band History:
Too much for here. I've been around a lot, been lucky enough to play with wonderful people, and have learned from all of them.
Your influences?
All over the map. I grew up in Detroit, so Motown and soul are huge to me - sadly I can't sing like that! Amos Lee, Cary Pierce, Creede Williams, John Hiatt, John Prine, John Mayer, Andrew Kreider, Ben Folds, Elton John, Billy Joel, Luke Doucet, Shawn Colvin, Bob Schneider
Favorite spot?
Believe it or not I love Northern Indiana where I now live, but I have been fortunate enough to travel the world. A few faves: My Motor City - my first home! Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Austin, Zurich - Switzerland (stunning!), London - England, Singapore, Toronto - Canada, San Diego, New York
Equipment used:
Tacoma acoustics, Fender electrics, Fender and Vox amps, Yamaha, Korg, Alesis, and Roland keys, Fender basses, Yamaha drums, various mics, percussion, and recording gear.
